Dancing The Apocalypse...TOM SERVICE explores the dark universe of Ravel's 12 minute masterpiece, La Valse, one the most powerful and puzzling pieces in the whole orchestral repertoire. It’s a work that is a portrait of a whole genre of music – The Waltz – its birth, life, and death. Ravel composed it in 1919 and 1920, after his devastating experiences serving in the First World War and the death of his mother, the human being he was closest to in his whole life. He initially planned the work in 1906 as a tribute to the waltzes of Johann Strauss, and the seductive, sensual structures of the dance form, a piece of music that would embody the whirling pleasure of dancers in Imperial balls in Vienna in the nineteenth century....
