The 1000 Mile Husky Race

Edward de la Billiere returns to alaska to follow the Iditarod, a gruelling, thousand-mile dog-sled race, to follow the fortunes of huskies he trained when he was a contestant. He charts their progress over the stark, beautiful landscape, from the state capital Anchorage to Nome, a small gold rush town next to the frozen Bering Sea. The race commemorates the Serum Run in 1925 when the people of Nome were struck by a diphtheria epidemic. The weather was too bad to fly so the only way to get life-saving medicine to the town was by a relay of dog teams across the state. The serum arrived just in time to save hundreds of lives.
