6 Music Live Hour

Gideon's headline act is Roxy Music, in concert at the BBC's Paris Theatre, in 1972, which includes lots of enthusiastic knob twiddling and keyboard bashing from the one and only Brian Eno.

It's Gideon Coe's turn to curate The Live Music Hour and his headline act is Roxy Music.

Tom's headline act is the mighty Led Zeppelin, in concert at the BBC's Paris Theatre, in 1971, which was a powerful but strange affair, due to the very polite audience! Rock and Roll! Sessions come courtesy of The Hat, recorded for Tom's 6 Music show in 2007, and Kenny Young and the Eggplants, a band capable of lifting the heaviest of souls.

Andrew, with his impeccable credentials as a former NME journalist, and editor of Q Magazine, recalls such rock and roll stories as making toast with Radiohead, his headline act, recorded live at the Glastonbury Festival in 2003. Sessions come courtesy of 1980's Aussie band The Triffids, and 1960's pop beat combo The Move.

So what's getting us at 6 Music all excited? Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames, and The Rolling Stones, recorded at the Camden Theatre on the 19th of March, 1964, that's what. Best known for his songs '(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding' (a hit for Elvis Costello), Cruel to Be Kind (a U.S. Top 40 single), and 'I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass', he was also an in-house producer for Stiff Records and produced Elvis Costello's first five albums.

The Rubinoos are an American power pop band, who formed in 1970. They are best known for their singles 'I Think We're Alone Now' (a cover of the hit by Tommy James & the Shondells, and later covered by Tiffany), and 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend', and for the theme song to the 1984 film Revenge of the Nerds.

Chris Hawkins presents The Rubinoos recorded at Reading University in 1979.

Marine Girls hailed from Hatfield in Hertfordshire, and formed in 1980 by two sixth form school friends: Tracey Thorn and Gina Hartman. Originally, Thorn played guitar and Gina was vocalist and percussionist. They were later joined by Jane Fox on bass and her younger sister Alice on joint vocals and percussion. The group sang minimalist songs about the sea, love and everything else.

From 1982, Thorn concentrated on her studies and her growing relationship with fellow Hull student Ben Watt. Marine Girls formally disbanded in 1983, and Tracey Thorn went on to achieve great success with Ben as Everything But The Girl, while the Fox sisters recorded as Grab Grab the Haddock.

Also on the show, Bleeding Hearts, recorded for the Friday Night Rock Show, and the ethereal All About Eve, recorded by 'Auntie' in October 1988.

Featuring post-rock giants Sonic Youth at the Royal Festival Hall in 1998.

First up, Secret Affair recorded in 1980 for the BBC's Rock Goes To College, whose first gig was opening for The Jam at Reading University in February 1979. The Blue Aeroplanes, who have released nine albums since 1984, are in session for Janice Long in 1987, and last but certainly not least is an early Sonic Youth session recorded for John Peel in 1989.

First up are Fluffy, an all female punk five piece who met at college in 1994 and were signed by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics to Anxious Records, until they broke up at the end of the decade. They have supported high profile acts such as The Foo Fighters, and were the opening act for the Sex Pistols reunion tour in Japan. Their only album 'Black Eye' was produced by Bill Price who also produced 'Never Mind The Bollocks'.

Keeping the punk spirit going are The Diagram Brothers in session from 1981, and then a session from 2008 by Tom Greenwood.

The Good, the Bad & the Queen is actually the name of the album by the unnamed British alternative supergroup, made up of Blur frontman Albarn, Paul Simonon, Simon Tong and Tony Allen, released in January 2007. The band, which formed in 2006, released their first single, 'Herculean' on the 30th of October that year following their appearance at the BBC's Electric Proms season at the redeveloped Roundhouse in Camden on 26th of October, during which they performed the entire album.

Plus a session from Welsh indie band, Helen Love, whose music is a combination of punk rock, bubblegum pop and disco dance music. The main thematic elements in their oeuvre are Joey Ramone, and summer days. Revel in the last moments of Summer with this session from 1998. To wrap-up the Live Music Hour we have the now defunct Royal Trux in session for Maryanne Hobbs at Radio 1 in May 1998.

Our session is by Plans & Apologies recorded for 6 Music, in the Hub, on 26th January 2007. The band split a year later.

We finish off the Live Hour with James King & The Lone Wolves which was recorded for David Jensen on 20th May 1984.

The session is by Mojave 3 who took on the new name 'Mojave,' but upon the discovery of another band already using the name, the '3' was added (in reference to the group's three members). Rowe (formerly of Chapterhouse) and Forrester joined shortly after the release of their first album. In 2006, the band did a Take-Away Show session with Vincent Moon. The session was recorded on 2nd September 2003

To round off the Live hour we have Terry Edwards And The Scapegoats

He formed the band Butterfield 8 with 'Young' Mark Bedford in 1987. He has subsequently performed and released records both as a solo artist (with and without his band, The Scapegoats), and as a session musician. The session was recorded for John Peel on 30th March 1999.

There's also a 1992 Peel session by Pond, a Grunge trio who formed in Portland in 1991, and a session to 'Goth Out' to by Ghostdance in 1986.

They were originally called Brother International.

They decided on the Heavies name borrowing from a linear note on a James Brown single.

Alexis Korner (in session in 1965)

The band formed in Ottawa, Canada in 2002.

They have released 4 albums to date.

Last year's 'Rising Sun' album was nominated for Instrumental Album of the Year at the 2011 Junos

(the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy's)

They played The Jazz Café in London and Hare and Hounds in Birmingham last month.

There are no forthcoming UK dates at present.

The Faces from 1971, archive sessions from The Pretty Things and Alexis Corner.

Tom McRae grew up in Chelmsford.

His parents, both vicars, and Tom sang in the choir.

At 18 he went off to study music politics at the Guild Hall University.

He released his debut album in 2001.

He also received a Mercury Music Prize nomination that same year for it.

Just Like Blood, All Maps Welcome, King of Cards and 2010's Alphabet of Hurricanes.

Beta Band (in session for John Peel 10th September 1997)

The Beta Band formed in Edinburgh in 1997.

They released their first EP 'Champion Versions' in 1997.

Another 2 EP's followed before the recording and released of their proper full length.

Before the release of Hot Shots II the band opened for Radiohead in the States.

In 2004 they released Heroes to Zeros (final mix by Nigel Godrich), before calling it a day.

Barrington Levy (in session for John Peel in February 1985)

Legendary dancehall and reggae artist from Jamaica, thought to be the first original singer of the dancehall era,

He was called reggae's 'Mellow Canary' by virtue of his strong, pure vocal style.

He started his solo career at the age of 14 becoming a popular performer at Jamaican dancehalls.

Although albums were not common in Jamaica at the time, Levy released 4 before 1980: Shaolin Temple, Bounty Hunter, Shine Eye Gal and critically acclaimed, Englishman.

By the 1980s Levy was one of the biggest Jamaican stars, and saw his international fame growing as well, especially in the UK.

Big Audio Dynamite (playing St George Hall in 1988)

Big Audio Dynamite formed by Mick Jones in 1984

They released their debut 'This is Big Audio Dynamite' in 1985.

The band reunited this year.

They have just completed a UK tour.

Loop Guru is a worldbeat group consisting of bassist/guitarist Salman Gita (born Sam Dodson) and programmer Jamuud (born David Muddyman).

They originally played together in The Transmitters before forming Loop Guru.

They released their debut single 'Shrine' in 1992.

Pale Saints (in session for John Peel in 23rd July 1989)

Pale Saints formed in Leeds in 1987.

They released their debut album 'The Comforts of Madness' in 1990.

In 1992 'In Ribbons' followed and final album 'Slow Buildings' in 1994.

The band split in 1996.

Kasabian formed in Leicester in 1999.

They have released 3 albums to date; Kasabian (2004), Empire (2006) and West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum.

Franz Ferdinand - 'Queen Margaret Union Glasgow 2004

Formed in Glasgow in 2002, and composed of Alex Kapranos, Bob Hardy, Nick McCarthy and Paul Thomson.

They first experienced chart success when their second single 'Take Me Out' reached #3 in the UK Charts, followed by their self titled debut album Franz Ferdinand which debuted on the UK album chart at #3

The band is named after the Austrian Archduke of the same name, whose assassination was a major factor in the outbreak of World War I. The band chose the name after watching the racehorse Archduke Ferdinand win the 2001 Northumberland Plate.

Brave Captain - 3rd December 2000.

After the breakup of the Boo Radleys, Carr launched a solo career, taking the name brave captain from a song by the U.S. rock band, Firehose.

His solo work has largely been more electronic based than his previous work, and mainly features himself on lead vocals, whereas in The Boo Radleys he rarely sang (despite writing the lyrics).

Sun Carriage existed from around 1988 - 1992. They were founded by Ron Price and Mathew Watts in Plymouth during the late 1980s.

As a tribute to Pete Seeger, a chance to hear him at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1978.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the premature death (aged just 47) of the influential Irish guitarist, singer and songwriter Rory Gallagher, Chris Hawkins presents a concert recorded at Middlesex Polytechnic in 1978. This was around the time of Rory's seventh studio album, 'Photo-Finish', which was a turning-point in his career, as he reverted to performing as part of a power trio.

Rory was always greatly respected by his peers. The Rolling Stones wanted him to replace Mick Taylor and Jimi Hendrix is reported to have shrugged off a question about what it was like to be greatest guitarist in the world with the words, I don't know. Go ask Rory Gallagher.

At The Drive In formed in 1993.

The band was from El Paso, Texas.

In their short 8 year career they released just 3 studio albums.

Acrobatic Tenement was released in 1996, In/Casino/Out followed in 1998 and Relationship of Command in 2000.

In 2001, a month before their US tour was due to begin the band split.

Members of At The Drive In went on to form The Mars Volta and Sparta.

They have released 6 studio albums.

The band announced after the release of their 2007 sixth studio album 'Twilight of the Innocents' they would be only be releasing singles, and did so every fortnight releasing 26 singles (the A-Z Series).

Charlotte Hatherley was a member of the band 1997-2006.

Their first single, 'In Shreds' on CBS, made number 42 on John Peel's Festive Fifty in 1982.

It was recorded in Rochdale in six weeks.

Echo & the Bunnymen (playing Glastonbury Festival in 1997)

Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant started to record as a duo under the name 'Echo'.

They made their debut live appearance at Liverpool club 'Eric's' as Echo & the Bunnymen.

They released their debut album 'Crocodiles' in 1980.

The band will be touring many festivals throughout July and August including Latitude.

They will also be headlining the UK tour throughout September.

The French duo has released 6 albums to date.

Orbital are brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll from Dartford, Kent.

Orbital formed in 1989.

Their first composition 'Chime' was recorded and mastered onto cassette for a total production cost £2.50.

They split in 2004 but in 2009 announced they would headline the Big Chill Festival.
