"You go in - you never come out" is the local name for the Taklamakan Desert in western China. Fifteen months ago, a team of British and Chinese explorers set out with their camels to make the first crossing of the so-called Desert of Death, 780 miles of uninterrupted sand where at the start, daytime temperatures soared to over 100 degrees, falling well below freezing by the end.
