Based on the true and extraordinary story of Anna Politkovskaya, the courageous Russian newspaper journalist murdered in 2006.

The drama series looks at five key events from her life with respect to Politkovskaya's work in Chechnya, from 1999 - up to her murder in 2006.

In the first episode, Anna wants to help evacuate 85 elderly, frail, sick people from an old people's home in war torn Grozny who have been abandoned there by the authorities. But there is opposition 'they could be terrorists disguised as old people' and Anna is advised to pretend she is only going to save the Russians. Meanwhile, her marriage finally breaks apart under the strain.

The inhabitants of a Chechen mountain village have written to Anna asking for her to investigate recent torture by the Russian army on civilians there. Anna interviews an elderly woman who was kept in a 12' outdoor pit - but then Anna herself is captured by Russian soldiers.

The rebels ask for Anna to go to theatre to act as a mediator between them and the Russian Government. The Russians use gas and hostages die. September, 2004. When Anna hears of the seizure of a school by Chechen militants - she heads off to Beslan to report on the crisis but can only get a flight to Rostov. As they descend, Anna becomes very sick. When she recovers from the suspected poisoning, Anna is congratulated at her book launch but her editor Dmitry says two of his staff have already been murdered and if necessary, he will get her off the paper and out of Moscow. Following a desperate call from Muratov's wife, Anna thinks it is best to end their love affair.
