Clare Moriarty20220320

In this series, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has deep conversations with people who have made a significant contribution to public life about what they believe. How have they navigated their inner life alongside their public profile? What has been their moral ‘touchstone' through the good times and the bad? How do they engage with faith and spirituality?

This week's guest is the Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Dame Clare Moriarty. Before taking up her current role last year, she had a distinguished 35-year career in the civil service. In that time, she became a highly respected figure whose last government job was as permanent secretary to the Department for Exiting the European Union. In 2017, she became a ‘faith and belief champion' in the civil service, saying, `of all the diversity characteristics, faith and belief is the one we talk about least`.

Elif Shafak20220220

In this series, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has conversations with public figures whose work engages with big questions about humankind, and who have an interesting relationship with religion and spirituality. What do they believe and how does that shape their values and actions?

This week's guest is the British-Turkish novelist and political scientist, Elif Shafak. Her work has been translated into 55 languages. Her books draw on diverse cultures and reflect her interest in history, philosophy and mysticism. Her stories often deal with extremely uncomfortable subjects - gender-based violence, child abuse, genocide - and they give voice to those on the margins of society - religious, ethnic and sexual minorities. It has come at a personal cost: she has been investigated and prosecuted by the Turkish authorities for 'crimes of obscenity' and ‘insulting Turkishness'. She is on the latest BBC list of 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world.

This week's guest is the psychologist Dr Susan Blackmore. She's spent five decades studying, thinking and writing about consciousness. Her captivation with the subject began when she had an out-of-body experience at the age 19. It was to change the course of her life as she set out to prove the existence of the paranormal. Her academic journey ultimately led her personally to scepticism. She's an atheist who is fascinated by beliefs. She's well known for her contribution to meme theory, which examines how habits and beliefs are passed on from one person to another.
