Verdi completed it in 1874, and conducted the premiere himself in Milan. Three large-scale choirs and the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by a Verdi specialist whose recent Cologne recording, which also featured bass Ferruccio Furlanetto, has been much acclaimed. Soloists Marina Poplavskaya and Joseph Calleja both sang alongside Furlanetto in last year's Simon Boccanegra at the Royal Opera House. Prom 14, Mahler's Symphony No 9 | 20110725 | Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London Presented by Penny Gore Mahler's last completed symphony, and one he never lived to hear, is brought to life in the Royal Albert Hall by Sir Roger Norrington in one of his final concerts as Principal Conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, a post he has held for 13 years. The Ninth Symphony was a work written at a time of personal crisis for Mahler, following the death of his daughter Maria, the loss of his job at the Vienna Court Opera and the diagnosis of his own heart disease. Musically, however, while allusions to death abound, ultimately the work fades into peaceful resignation; as Alban Berg described it: 'it expresses an extraordinary love of the earth, of nature, the longing to live in peace, to enjoy it completely to the very heart of one's being, before death comes, as irresistibly it does'. Mahler: Symphony No. 9 Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR) Sir Roger Norrington (conductor) This Prom will be repeated on Wednesday 27th July at 2pm. Prom 48, Brahms, Schumann | 20110819 | BBC PROMS 2011 Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London Presented by Petroc Trelawny The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and their Associate Guest Conductor, Andrew Manze, continue the celebration of Brahms in this late night concert with a richly romantic programme with pianist Angela Hewitt. Angela Hewitt starts the concert on solo piano with the first two of the popular Op. 117 Intermezzos by Brahms written in 1892. Inspired by a Scottish folk song the first's beautiful melody is concealed in an inner part, and the second intermezzo uses arpeggios as a texture. They are two sad lullabies and some of the last piano music Brahms wrote before he died in 1897. At the beginning of Brahms' life, in 1853 he met Robert Schumann who became his musical father figure during their short but intense friendship. Schumann's Introduction and Allegro was written in 1849 just before Brahms met the Schumanns and was premiered with Clara Schumann at the keyboard. It was later dedicated to Brahms, and Clara was to became the great love of Brahms's life. Finally we observe Brahms through the prism of an admirer - Arnold Schoenberg - who arranged his piano quartet for orchestra in 1937 and highlighted the influence that Brahms had in music travelling from Bach and Beethoven, through to the music composed in the twentieth century. Prom 59: Hooray For Hollywood | 20111226 | BBC PROMS 2011 Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall, London in August Presented by Suzy Klein Another chance to hear John Wilson and his Orchestra with starry soloists and the Maida Vale Singers celebrating the Golden Age of Hollywood film Musicals, from the earliest days through to the 1960s. Back in the mid 20th century the Hollywood studios attracted the best composers, lyricists and orchestrators to write for their stars. The results are what John Wilson calls 'miniature works of art' which were played by orchestras composed of virtuoso players. Matching that, the John Wilson Orchestra is made up of the cream of Britain's orchestral musicians who have wowed Proms audiences with the passion and sheer vivacity of their playing. They perform classics from the 1930s onwards, from films staring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers including the title numbers from 'Shall We Dance' and 'Top Hat', through the 40s and 50s with numbers from 'Strike up the Band' and 'Guys and Dolls', through to hit musical films from the 60s including 'Gypsy' and 'West Side Story'. Prom 67, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis | 20110904 | BBC PROMS 2011 Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London Presented by Andrew McGregor In the last of this season's Choral Sundays, Sir Colin Davis tackles the largest and longest of Beethoven's non-stage works, the Missa Solemnis. This monumental work seems to skirt the boundaries of whether it is music made for the concert hall or the church. 'My chief aim was to awaken and permanently instill religious feelings not only into the singers but also into the listeners,' Beethoven himself wrote of the work. The London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and London Philharmonic Choir lead the huge forces in what Beethoven considered to be his supreme achievement in music. The quartet of soloists, made up of soprano Helena Juntunen, mezzo Sarah Connolly, tenor Paul Groves, and bass Matthew Rose, have demanding roles in this work, where the orchestra, chorus, and quartet each take on changing and challenging musical roles.
