In this week's Afternoon on 3 Penny Gore picks up the baton to celebrate all seven performing groups with a concert each - from right across the UK and Europe. She begins today with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the beautiful acoustic of Aberdeen's Music Hall with their Scots Chief Conductor Donald Runnicles in his first season at the helm, and the BBC Philharmonic with a smoky programme of Rachmaninov given at the Italian festival of which their Italian Chief Conductor is Artistic Director - at Stresa by Lake Maggiore in the foothills of the Italian Alps. Today it's the turn of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the BBC Singers, with very recent concerts from tours to Italy and France showcasing their wide-ranging repertoire of both British and non-British music. Today she rounds off the week with the BBC's orchestras based in south-east England: the BBC Concert Orchestra showcasing the early twentieth-century British repertoire that is their speciality, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra with a blockbuster concert from their Spanish tour with Chief Conductor Jiri Belohlavek and soprano Christine Brewer - here heard in the stunning new concert hall at Oviedo in the far north of the country.
