Purcell's lavish semi-opera - a spectacular reworking of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream - was a huge success when it was premiered at the Dorset Garden Theatre in 1692, and contains some of the composer's most ethereal and sensual music. Oberon and Titania are the quarrelling King and Queen of the Fairies who inhabit a bizarre unfolding world of farce and wit.

Ravi Shankar, the legendary ambassador of Indian Classical Music, makes his Proms debut at the age of 85. His daughter and protégée Anoushka joins the BBC Symphony Orchestra to perform his Sitar Concerto No.1, before the pair team up for a sequence of ragas.

Polish composer Henryck Górecki's mesmerising symphony of songs was heard at the Proms for the first time. Its three movements each paint a picture of a mother's sorrow over a lost child - the Virgin Mary's lamentation at the foot of the cross; 18-year old Second World War prisoner Helena Wanda Blazusiakówna's secret cell wall writings; and a peasant mother's mourning over the loss of her soldier son in the First World War.

Tchaikovsky's rarely performed one-act opera Iolanta is a simple but touching fairytale, which tells the story of a blind, innocent heroine, Iolanta, who falls in love with the knight Vaudémont. As her love is awakened, her sight gradually returns.
