20161224Petula Clark is a lifetime friend and supporter of Richard and Karen Carpenter. In this special programme, she tells the story of their music for Christmas including their seminal single 'Merry Christmas Darling' and their landmark album 'Christmas Portrait'.

The Carpenters and Christmas; for many, they go hand-in-hand. Like most of us, they'd grown up listening to seasonal albums by the likes of Percy Faith and Spike Jones, and both Karen and Richard had sung in their school choirs, performing Christmas songs every year. Once they'd made a name for themselves with hits like 'We've Only Just Begun', 'Superstar' and '(They Long To Be) Close To You', it was just a matter of time before they turned their talents to Christmas. And, with their unique sound - Karen's warmly expressive voice and Richard's diverse talents as arranger, producer, pianist and composer - what they produced became Christmas classics.

The programme features choice selections from The Carpenters' two Christmas albums released in 1978 and 1984.

Presented by Petula Clark.

Written and produced by Malcolm Prince.
