The Court Of Last Resort

Joshua Rozenberg presents the inside story of the International Criminal Court; why and how it came into being, its role as an international law-enforcer, and the huge practical and political hurdles it must overcome if it is to succeed in its mission.

The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno-Ocampo reveals in this series that he has a simple ambition - to rid the world of the worst crimes against humanity before he steps down from the post in seven years time.

The ICC, formed in 1998, is the first permanent international court, and has jurisdiction to prosecute those guilty of the most egregious violations of human rights - genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Its task is enormous and has been undertaken with one arm tied behind its back - the refusal of the United States to take part.
