Born in Surrey, she studied at dancing schools in London – eventually joining the school attached to the Vic-Wells Ballet – later known as the Royal Ballet. Her teenage debut was as a snowflake in ‘The Nutcracker' in 1934, with her solo debut in 1935. Sir Frederick Ashton made her the star of numerous ballets. Widely admired by both fans and critics, many of Britain's leading male dancers were her partners. Latterly Rudolf Nureyev reinvigorated her career, as she continued to perform around the world. She married Panamanian diplomat, Dr Roberto Arias in 1955, and cared for him after he was nearly paralyzed in an assassination attempt in 1964. Awarded a CBE in 1950, she became a Dame in 1956. Dame Margot Fonteyn died aged 71 in 1991. Redefining the style of 20th century British ballet, the impact she made lives on. This was the 750th episode of Desert Island Discs broadcast on the 12th April 1965. Dudley Moore Cbe | 19691115 | 20221225 (BBC7) 20221226 (BBC7) | From Blood, Sweat & Tears to Ludwig van Beethoven. Comedian, composer, pianist and actor Dudley Moore shares his castaway choices with Roy Plomley. Born in Dagenham, Essex, Dudley recalls how his gift for music won him an organ scholarship to Oxford's Magdalen College. He left in 1958 as an accomplished jazz pianist, performing with Johnny Dankworth and touring the US for a year with the Vic Lewis band. On his return, he met the late Peter Cook and was asked to join the Edinburgh Festival comedy revue, Beyond The Fringe in 1960. Also starring Alan Bennett and Jonathan Miller, the extended show went on to run for four years in London's West End and on Broadway in New York. Dudley explains how his partnership with Peter led to the creation of their classic characters Dud and Pete for BBC TV. Writing film scores also kept him busy. Dudley Moore went on to pursue a successful career in Hollywood, starring in a number of hit screen comedies. Most memorably he played alongside Bo Derek in the movie 10 in 1979. His role as a hard-drinking millionaire in 1981's Arthur won him an Oscar nomination. By the late 1990s, Moore endured a number of illnesses – developing the rare condition Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He revealed how the affliction sadly robbed him of his greatest pleasure - his ability to play music. Married and divorced four times, Dudley Moore was awarded a CBE in 2001. Born in 1935, he died aged 66 in 2002. One of the most popular British film stars of the 1940s, Margaret Lockwood starred in big screen classics The Lady Vanishes, The Man In Grey and The Wicked Lady. Born in British India in 1916, she moved to England aged 4, making her stage debut at 12, and later studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. British Lion launched her film career - and she later worked with the Gainsborough film company and Rank. She worked with directors like Carol Reed and Michael Powell, and opposite actors like Douglas Fairbanks Jnr., Michael Redgrave and James Mason. A screen beauty, she also was popular with the public for her natural poise and unaffectedly straightforward style. Margaret was awarded the CBE in 1981, She died aged 73 in 1990. In the first of two Desert Island appearances, Ronnie shares highlights from his early years and rise in show business. Brought up in Edinburgh, Corbett attended a church youth club where he made his first performance. National Service in the RAF also gave him an opportunity to entertain, before being invited by David Frost to participate in his new ITV show alongside Ronnie Barker. The duo went on to win their own series on BBC TV. The Two Ronnies became one of the most successful and long running comedy sketch shows of all time with an audience of over 18 million. In 1963, David was heading towards media superstardom as the presenter of BBC TV's ground-breaking satire series, That Was The Week That Was. Famously covering the Profumo Affair, it was devised by Ned Sherrin, with regulars including Bernard Levin, Willie Rushton, Millicent Martin and Roy Kinnear. David's career spanned journalism and comedy writing - from The Frost Report to Frost on Sunday and TV-AM. He garnered international attention with his revealing interview with former US President Richard Nixon in 1977. He was knighted in 1993. In the first of what were to become two appearances (the second was in 1989) Bogarde doesn't think he could cope with the solitude and silence of being castaway. The actor is a big fan of music and complains eight choices aren't enough. He made his London West End theatre-acting debut in 1939, after which he served in the British Army during the Second World War. His film contract with the Rank Organisation in 1948 was the spark for his very successful career. Big screen highlights included: The Blue Lamp, The Servant and the Doctor films based on Richard Gordon's novels. In 1977 he embarked on a second career of several best-selling novels. Bogarde was created a Knight Bachelor in 1992. Born in 1921, he died aged 78 in 1999. Actor Stanley Holloway shares his castaway choices with Roy Plomley Born in East London, Stanley became a stage and cinema stalwart, best known on screen for My Fair Lady, Brief Encounter, Passport To Pimlico, The Titfield Thunderbolt and The Lavender Hill Mob. It was playing Eliza Doolittle's father Alfred in the original Broadway (1956) and London (1958) productions of My Fair Lady that won him the 1964 film role which brought Stanley international fame.
