There can't be too many men or women of letters who are present at the destruction of an entire city. Samuel Pepys could certainly give modern online news blogs a run for their money.
In fact were he alive today, his compulsive diarising would have made him a natural-born blogger. 1666 was certainly a momentous year to be in London - thanks to a single bakery, fire swept the capital and destroyed it.
Naturally the year does not start this way - at the outset, Samuel's biggest concerns are his nascent dalliance with actress Mrs. Knipp (he is 'Dapper Dicky' to her 'Barbara Allen') and how his snoring keeps his wife awake.
Kris Marshall plays Samuel Pepys - a far cry from his recent role replacing Ben Miller in Death In Paradise. A firm favourite with viewers thanks to a regular role in My Family alongside Robert Lindsay and Zoe Wanamaker, Kris also appeared in Richard Curtis's film Love Actually.
First broadcast on Radio 4 in 2013.
