First released in 1980 and directed by Alan Parker, the success of the movie and its Oscar-winning title song led to a long running TV series that was shown around the world. 'Fame - The Musical' premiered at the Cambridge Theatre in London in July 1995 and was seen by three and a half million people in the UK before it closing in April 2006. The stage musical has toured North America, Europe, Asia and Australia and a new UK tour is planned for late 2006.

Based on the classic 1968 film, Ian Fleming's children's story became a huge success when it opened in London in 2002. Nominated for three Olivier Awards and winning Best Musical in the 2003 Variety Club Awards, the original London stage production of Chitty broke every record at the London Palladium. The musical features the work of composers Robert and Richard Sherman, and today's programme will feature the songs Truly Scrumptious, Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain, and the Oscar-nominated title song. Plus, the competition, Forbidden Broadway and a selection of listener requests.
	20060730	This week's Essential Musical is 1950's Call Me Madam. Composed by Irving Berlin for legendary entertainer Ethel Merman, the show gave her Broadway's first musical hit of the decade. Set in mythical "Lichtenburg," Merman's character was based on Perle Mesta, a real-life Democratic party fundraiser who was named ambassador to Luxembourg. The show spoofed America's then penchant for lending billions to other countries and although the book is a bit dated for today's audiences, the score is filled with timeless numbers. Merman later enjoyed her greatest film triumph when she recreated her original role in the 1953 big screen adaptation directed by Walter Lang. Key songs: 'The Hostess With The Mostes', 'You're Just In Love', and 'It's A Lovely Day Today'. Plus, the competition, 'Forbidden Broadway' and a selection of requests.
	20060806	This week's Essential Musical is 'Pippin', 'a pop enthused fantasia about the rebel son of a medieval ruler'. The show was a massive hit when it opened on Broadway in 1972, picking up 11 Tony Award nominations, winning five, including two for Bob Fosse for his direction and choreography, and one for Ben Vereen as Best Actor. Featuring the music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz, the show ran for five years and an astonishing 1,944 performances at Broadway's Imperial Theatre. Schwartz has since said that 'Pippin' should be considered as a 'time capsule', the work, as he puts it, of an 'idealistic kid' in an era of social turmoil. Featured songs include: 'Corner of the Sky', 'Spread a Little Sunshine' and 'Magic To Do'. Also this week, 'Forbidden Broadway' pokes fun at Barbra Streisand, the competition and a selection of requests.

It was a massive hit, running for over 1,600 performances and becoming the first musical to be broadcast on television in 1939. Featuring the classic Noel Gay songs The Lambeth Walk, Leaning on a Lamp Post and Me and My Girl, the show was revived in 1985, running for eight years at the Adelphi Theatre in London, and then for over 1,400 performances on Broadway.

The Sound of Music began life in 1958 and ultimately became one of the most successful shows in history (both on stage and on film). Elaine's programme features contributions from Mary Rodgers (daughter of composer Richard Rodgers), film director Robert Wise, impresario Cameron Mackintosh and Broadway director Hal Prince. Featuring the original Broadway cast recording (1959) starring Mary Martin, the 1965 film version (with Julie Andrews) and the 1998 Broadway revival starring Rebecca Luker as Maria. He served his theatrical apprenticeship with esteemed director and producer George Abbott during the 1940s and 50s. In 1954, Hal presented his first musical, The Pajama Game, which he later followed with West Side Story, and by the early 60s, he began to direct. His credits include the original Broadway productions of Cabaret (1966), Follies in 1971 and the acclaimed 1994 revival of Show Boat. Earlier this year, just as he was celebrating his 80th birthday, Hal suffered a stroke. This in-depth interview, recorded in New York, proves he's back in good health and as busy as ever, already planning his next Broadway musical.
