Description
01200611121/2. Walter Hussey (1909-1985) was described as the last great patron of arts in the Church of England. David Owen Norris explores how the works he commissioned for his parish in Northampton, from the likes of Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and Benjamin Britten, revolutionised the way Anglicans engaged with modern art.
02 LAST200611192/2. David Owen Norris looks at the continuing influence of Walter Hussey (1909-1985) on church art and debates whether his original vision has been lost or realised.
When Hussey was made Dean of Chichester in 1956, he continued his passion for modern art, installing controversial works by Sutherland, Chagall and John Piper in the cathedral, and commissioning Bernstein's Chichester Psalms.
