A story of childhood, seen through the eyes of Rose, a girl who struggles to comprehend life - with a brilliant father who gambles away all his money on the stock-exchange, and a highly-strung mother who has sacrificed her career as a pianist to bring up Rose, her sisters Mary and Cordelia, and her much-loved brother Richard Quinn.

They meet Nancy Phillips, whose family is fated to become entangled with theirs.

His brilliant but wayward mind - which has saved a murderess from the gallows - is now driving him nearer and nearer to ruin.
