Gandhi and RABINDRANATH TAGORE were, between them, the heart and mind of India in the struggle for independence.

Tagore, the aristocratic poet and thinker, dubbed Gandhi `Mahatma' or Great Soul, and in return Gandhi, the ceaselessly active man of the people, called Tagore the Great Sentinel.

However, despite their friendship, the two clashed publicly over the ways and means to a modern India.
