Apartheid: From Bitter Almonds To The Rainbow Nation20190607In the last part of his series on the mechanics of hatred, Allan Little explores the roots of South Africa's apartheid ideology. He learns how white Afrikaner nationalists used historical myths to cast themselves as God's people, bringing the light of civilisation to a savage continent. These myths framed black people as barbarous and inferior, helping to justify the apartheid system, which legalised the dispossession of the black population. We also hear how the country managed to confront and dismantle its fears and hatreds, ending apartheid and forging a new, inclusive story of the rainbow nation.

Bosnia: The Weaponisation Of History20190603Hate seems to be everywhere - whether it's white supremacists marching on the streets of America, jihadists slaughtering Christians in Sri Lanka or the massacre of Muslims in New Zealand. In this five part series, BBC journalist Allan Little unpicks the mechanics of hatred and reveals how this dangerous emotion has been whipped up and disseminated throughout history. Allan Little begins with the hatred he witnessed on the killing fields of the Bosnian War, deconstructing how Serbian leaders like Slobodan Milosevic and Radovan Karadzic manipulated and weaponised history to inculcate a violent loathing that would lead to the massacre of thousands of Bosnian Muslims at Srebrenica. It's a hatred and an ideology that continues to inspire today's extreme far-right.

Pogroms: Anti-semitism, Revolution And Civil War20190605In the third part of his series on the mechanics of hate, Allan Little examines a wave of anti-Semitic violence that erupted a century ago. During the Russian civil war, after the revolution of 1917, tens of thousands of Jews were murdered in a series of horrific pogroms. In this programme he hear how warring factions were united by their hatred for the Jewish people, fuelled by the mistaken belief that they by attacking the Jews they were 'punching up' at a dangerous and powerful elite.

Vietnam: Hatred In The Name Of Liberty20190606In the fourth part of his series on the mechanics of hatred, Allan Little examines how military training led many American soldiers to hate not just the Communist army they were fighting, but the entire Vietnamese population. This hatred would spur many to commit atrocities against civilians. We learn how a country founded on the ideals of the Enlightenment drew on misogyny and racism to drill conscripted soldiers in violent hatred - both in training and as they pushed through the jungles and villages of Vietnam.
