A concert at St Paul's Hall in Huddersfield features new works by the festival's Composer in Residence, Georg Friedrich Haas. In the UK premiere of Hyena, soloist Mollena Lee Williams-Haas joins Klangforum Wien to narrate her own written text, which draws on her experience of alcoholism, and The Arditti Quartet give the first performance of Haas' 10th String Quartet. Also featuring music recorded at the festival from Ensemble Musikfabrik's 16 x 2 x Solo project, a series of new commissions by the ensemble's solo players, and Graham McKenzie, HCMF's Artistic Director, joins Robert and Sara to look ahead at other festival events. You can hear the German/Icelandic Ensemble Adapter playing music by Bunita Marcus and a Naomi Pinnock world premiere in tribute to the cult Japanese ensemble Sound Space Ark, and British pianist Richard Uttley in pieces by Christian Mason and Olga Neuwirth. Plus Taiwan-born soprano Peyee Chen in two solo works by Michael Finnissy and free improvisation from British trumpeter Percy Pursglove and Norwegian drummer Thomas Stronen. | 03 | 20161217 | Robert Worby and Sara Mohr-Pietsch with highlights from the 2016 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival including music from Rebecca Saunders and Jennifer Walshe. The Austrian-based contemporary chamber orchestra Klangforum Wien made a welcome return to Huddersfield this year with a new work from Rebecca Saunders - "Skin" - which was inspired, in part, by the work of Samuel Beckett. Also in tonight's programme, an exciting collaboration between composer/vocalist Jennifer Walshe and the Arditti Quartet; highlights from a recital given by pianist Richard Uttley; and a look at the innovative work of the Stone Orchestra who create new instruments (lithophones) to examine relationships between music and stone.
