In His Hands
It's forty years since country singer Tammy Wynette stayed true to her musical and marital roots by urging women to “stand by your man” and since that time music, of all genres, has evolved to mirror changing social attitudes and, not least, attitudes towards domestic abuse.
Candi Staton, herself a victim at the hands of two abusive partners, presents In His Hands a music-based documentary which includes an honest account of her troubles together with moving contributions from Sheryl Gascoigne, David Soul, Tina Turner and Boy George's mother, Dinah O'Dowd together with expert music comment from Paul Gambaccini.
The programme doesn't claim to offer answers but illustrates how each of the victims took their first step towards self assertion and recovery.
Music from Tracy Chapman, Jamelia, the Dixie Chicks, Alice Cooper, Tina Turner and Chris Rea is featured together with Candi's own heartfelt His Hands … a song so far removed from her seventies hit about abuse Young Hearts Run Free – it proves how she, like the music and the times, and as the programme illustrates, has grown personally and creatively.
