Jazz On 3 (summary)

Kenny Wheeler's 75th Birthday Concert

Jez Nelson presents a star-studded concert by one of the greatest living jazz composers today, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler. For this special birthday celebration, he'll be joined by a stellar line up of premier jazz musicians including legendary saxophonists Lee Konitz and Evan Parker, bassist Dave Holland, and vocalist Norma Winstone. As well as compositions from his classic album Music for Large and Small Ensembles, the concert culminates in the world premiere of a major new work commissioned by Radio 3 for this 18-piece big band.

Joel Harrison

Jez Nelson presents a concert by American singer and guitarist Joel Harrison. Just as influenced by Johnny Cash as John Coltrane, his music presents an intriguing mixture of country and western with downtown [k]NEW [k]YORK[/k] jazz, with the multi-million selling Norah Jones a former band member.

His current band is Gary Versace on hammond organ, Dan Weiss on drums, and the noted alto saxophonist David Binney.

Huw Warren and Peter Herbert

Jez Nelson presents a concert recording of UK pianist Huw Warren and Austrian bass virtuoso Peter Herbert. Part of the eighties generation that came to prominence with the anarchic Big Band Loose Tubes, Warren plays quirky, irreverent music unconstrained by genre category and has been described alongside Django Bates as one of """"the most creative and exciting of emerging new [k]BRITISH[/k] musicians"""". He is joined by Austria's recent jazz musician of the year, Peter Herbert.
