This week Jamie has more of his favourite jazz, including highlights from this year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

This includes a recording from the BBC’s special Friday Night Is Music Night: The Song of Soho performance at Cheltenham, which featured the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Guy Barker Big Band and Georgie Fame celebrating the London borough of Soho through song.

Jamie also shares a recording from the live broadcast of Jazz 625 Live: For One Night Only. This one-off event saw the BBC’s classic jazz programme Jazz 625 brought back for one special evening as part of Cheltenham Jazz Festival, featuring the likes of Jean Toussaint, Gregory Porter, Jacqui Dankworth, Robert Mitchell and more.

The first of a two-part special in which Jamie visits Hollywood actor, director and producer Clint Eastwood at his production studio in LA, the place where he records the scores for his films.

Clint talks about the humorous side of jazz and how that has changed over the years, about the clubs he used to visit in his youth and about the legendary artists he would go to see perform, or even mingle with as well as his time in the army and the musicians he met there.

In a warm, personal interview, we see Clint Eastwood from a different angle, reunited with Jamie who he worked with on the soundtrack for Gran Torino, and talking passionately about the music he loves.

"I thought 'What is this sound?' It's not jazz it's not blues - I was 14 and it was a huge turning point for me." The pair talk through their shared love of New Orleans' rich musical history, their influences and inspirations and what the future might hold. This week Jamie shares one of his favourite recordings from the BBC’s archive, first broadcast on the show Jazz 625, in celebration of Jazz 625 Live at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Jazz 625 Live sees the BBC’s iconic 1960s jazz programme return for one night only on BBC 4, broadcasting live from Cheltenham Jazz Festival. To mark the occasion, Jamie returns to the archives to dig out one of his favourite performances from the programme.

Jamie’s show this week also features some brand new releases and more of Jamie’s favourite classic jazz.

Jamie's guest is Grammy-nominated vocalist Jazzmeia Horn, who performs tracks live in session recorded especially for the show.

Originally from Dallas, Texas, Jazzmeia won the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition in 2015, and appeared at the London Jazz Festival in November 2018. Her debut album A Social Call was released in 2017 on Prestige Records.

Jamie also has an exclusive first play of Ashley Henry’s new single, plus a live track from the BBC Music Introducing stage by The Comet Is Coming, recorded at this year’s South By South West Festival in Austin, Texas.

This week Jamie is joined by American saxophonist Jean Toussaint, for an in-depth look into his relationship with jazz in Take 5. He also shares some of his favourite classic and contemporary jazz tracks.

Born in the Caribbean, Jean Toussaint studied at Berklee College of Music and was mentored by saxophonist Billy Pierce. He was a member of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and won a Grammy with his work for the group. He moved to London in 1987 and over the course of his career he has played alongside the likes of Courtney Pine, Max Roach, Terence Blanchard, Horace Silver and Gil Evans.

He released his eleventh record Brother Raymond in 2018 with his Allstar Sextet.

North Carolina-born Lee Fields has been releasing music since the late 1960s and has played with everyone from Kool & The Gang to Martin Solveig. Encompassing jazz, blues, funk and soul influences, his latest album It Rains Love came out earlier this year on Big Crown Records.
