This final episode brings us to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. From ballet music by the Soviet Azerbaijani composer Kara Karayev; to Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, known for combining Mugham folk traditions with 20th-century western music; and Tajik composer Tolib Shakhidi, whose pieces also synthesise east and west. Conductor Kirill Karabits explores the musical heart of eastern Europe and central Asia. In this final episode he focuses on the musical traditions of the '-stan' countries. |
