Lifesize

PATRICK WRIGHT celebrates the centenary of the birth of the great British sculptor HENRY MOORE.

He visits three key locations to investigate the apparent paradox of Moore the international star and Moore the essential Englishman: Yorkshire, where Moore was born; Hampstead, where he established himself as an artist; and Much Hadham in Hertfordshire, where he worked.

He asks what it was in the combination of cosmopolitan influences and British sensibility that won Moore such universal appeal, and why he became a national hero.
