Jez Nelson presents highlights of Adventures In Sound, an afternoon of free improvisation at the Southbank Centre recorded during the 2010 London Jazz Festival. Revisiting the spirit of a fascinating extended concert from a few years ago, and curated by Jazz on Three, this is definitely a case of 'expect the unexpected'. Dub-reggae transforms into squally electronics, with jazz and improv at its core, in the music of Zed-U, featuring Shabaka Hutchings on saxophone, Neil Charles on bass and electronics and Tom Skinner on drums. They'll be joined onstage by the likes of Matthew Bourne, an award winning pianist who always pushes the boundaries in unexpected directions, often with a healthy dose of wit and eccentricity. Plus a true legend of improvised music, bassist Barre Philips, an important link between the birth of Amercian free jazz in the 1960s and the European free improv scene. Other performers include reeds player Tony Bevan, drummer Tony Buck and pianist Howard Riley.

Charles Lloyd Quartet And Norma Winstone Trio

Jez Nelson presents one of the most anticipated performances of the London Jazz Festival, featuring American saxophonist Charles Lloyd. Mirrors, Lloyd's recent release on the ECM label, has been acclaimed as a highlight of his forty-plus year career. And his new quartet, featuring Jason Moran, one of the premier pianists of his generation, drummer Eric Harland and bassist Reuben Rogers, is possibly Lloyd's finest since his seminal 1960s group with Jack DeJohnette, Keith Jarrett and Cecil McBee.

Opening the show is a set from British vocalist Norma Winstone with her European trio featuring German reeds-player Klaus Gesing and Italian pianist Glauco Venier. Performing music from their latest album 'Stories Yet To Tell' the trio weave improvised lines and collective compositions that draw influences far and wide, from medieval ballads to Wayne Shorter.

Darcy James Argue's Secret Society

Jez Nelson presents a set by one of New York's most exciting young bandleader-composers - Darcy James Argue and his eighteen-piece big band the Secret Society, recorded at Cafe Oto during the 2010 London Jazz Festival. Argue formed the Secret Society in 2005 and has an approach that fuses tradition and innovation. He says his aim is to evoke 'an alternate musical history in which the dance orchestras that ruled the Swing Era never went extinct, but remained a popular and vital part of the evolving musical landscape'. Argue's 2009 debut album, Infernal Machines, featured on more than seventy 'best of the year' lists. This year he and the band topped the Rising Star, Big Band; Rising Star, Arranger and Rising Star, Composer categories in the DownBeat Critics' Poll and won two Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards.

Jez Nelson presents a solo performance by pianist Geri Allen. Recorded in the Purcell Room during the 2010 London Jazz Festival, she explores what it means to be an African-American woman, musician, mother, daughter and teacher, in a set that was accompanied by films created by photographer and film-maker Carrie Mae Weems.

Since the early 1990s, Allen has cemented her position as one of the foremost pianists of her generation. With the release earlier this year of her album Flying Toward The Sound, inspired by Herbie Hancock, Cecil Taylor and McCoy Tyner, she has also established herself as an accomplished solo performer.

Jez Nelson presents New York based jazz pianist Robert Glasper in concert with his trio at the 2010 London Jazz Festival. Glasper, who has been described as one of the most promising pianists of his generation, works regularly with hip hop artists including Mos Def, Bilal and The Roots. His trio, featuring drummer Mark Colenburg and bassist Derrick Hodge, is firmly rooted in the classic jazz piano trio tradition. But Glasper's compositions, and the group's approach to rhythm and group interplay, are influenced by contemporary hip-hop and soul music.
