In this latest show Mark looks at the explosion of electronic music in New York during the 1980s, playing tracks by Afrika Baambaata, Hashim and Shannon alongside contemporary NYC tunes by Holy Ghost and LCD Soundsystem. In the second hour, Mark is joined by producer and pivotal figure in the NYC electro scene, Arthur Baker to discuss his musical influences. Best known in the UK for his work with New Order Arthur was a club DJ in Boston before moving to New York in 1981 and becoming involved in the music scene there. He went on produce Afrika Baambaata's seminal tune 'Planet Rock', have a number one single with Rockers Revenge 'Walking on Sunshine' and reinvigourate the career of British jazz funk band Freeez with his production on their worldwide hit 'IOU'. Arthur tells Mark about life in New York during that era and plays the music which inspired his production work, including tracks by The Undisputed Truth, Kraftwerk and David Bowie. In the final hour of the show, there's a guest mix from up and coming New York based artist Penguin Prison, who's debut album is out at the end of the year fusing electronic production with pop melodies.

Hailing from Dusseldorf in Germany, Propaganda were signed to Trevor Horn's ZTT label in 1984 by Paul Morley, whom Claudia would later marry.

In this edition, Mark previews a selection of the synth based acts playing this year's Bestival festival on the the Isle of Wight, where Back To The Phuture has its own stage for the first time. 80s music fanatic and record label MD Mark Jones goes Back To The Phuture for a mutant disco special. The sound of New York in the early part of that decade, mutant disco - or 'no wave' as it was also known - became popular in the clubs with labels like Ze Records cranking out a stream of big tunes. The mutant sound soon spread to the UK, with the Wag Club in London and Manchester's Hacienda embracing it and creating their own mutant bands such as Funkapolitan and A Certain Ratio.

In this show, Mark plays classic tracks from Was (Not Was), 23 Skidoo and Animal Nightlife, alongside current mutant-influenced music from Yaysayer, Lonelady and LCD Soundsystem. In the second hour of the show Mark's joined by August Darnell - talismanic frontman of Kid Creole And The Coconuts, talking about the New York 'no wave' scene and life on Ze Records in the 1980s. Jones, best known as the founder boss of leading independent record label Wall of Sound - home of Royksopp and Grace Jones - is joined for his first show by The Human League's Phil Oakey.

The Human League were one of most successful acts in the early 1980s, pioneering synthesised pop music and having a string of chart hits including Love Action.

In this in-depth interview, Oakey tells Mark about the soundtrack of 1970s Sheffield and plays tunes by Cerrone, Georgio Moroder and Caberet Voltaire which inspired the band to come together.

There's also a 30 minute mix from the godfather of acid house music, DJ Pierre direct from Detroit, featuring tunes from Yazoo and Gino Soccio, which inspired the elusive DJ to create the distinctive acid techno sound.

Best known for their top ten hit Fade To Grey In 1980, Visage were a key part of the early synth pop movement which went on to spawn bands including Ultravox and Magazine.

Rusty plays the music that inspired him during this era and talks to Mark about working with Steve Strange, Midge Ure, and promoting the famous Blitz club in London which spawned the new romantic scene.

In this edition of the show, Mark is joined by Ultravox founder and synth musician John Foxx. Foxx formed Ultravox back in 1973 (when they were called Tiger Lily) and made three albums with the band before leaving in 1979. Since then, Foxx has perused a career as an artist and musician, having a solo hit with 'Underpass' in 1983 and making a number of experiment albums using keyboards. In this programme Foxx talks to Mark about his career as a musician and tells him how tracks by the Beatles, Roxy Music and A Guy Called Gerald have influenced his work.
