Pocket Guides 2023, Part 1: Arctic Monkeys, Ezra Collective, Fred Again.. And J Hus | 20230904 | In the first part of three pocket guides, Matt Everitt profiles four of this year's Mercury Award nominated albums, with bespoke & archive interviews as well as deep cuts. The first album he covers is by Arctic Monkeys. The Car is their first new music in nearly 5 years, and although their recent tour illustrated they have no desire to distance themselves from their past. this is much more louche and laid back affair that creatively allows the band to keep evolving. Ezra Collective's Where I'm Meant to Be is the second album by the British jazz quintet who've benefitted from the luxury of having more time after Lockdown to play together and capture the essence of their fluid, exquisite sound. Next is the currently ubiquitous Fred Again.. who's album Actual Life 3 has the ability to create sometimes euphoric, sometime thoughtful, always interesting electronic music that taps into house and trance and pop and ambient music and emotive piano and reallys seems to speak to people. Finally, Matt profiles East London rapper J Hus' second album Beautiful And Brutal Yard which is an invigorating blend of dancehall, UK rap, grime, afroswing and drill and features an amazing lineup of collaborators including Burna Boy, Popcaan, Jorja Smith, CB, Naira Marley, Villz and Boss Belly. Pocket Guides 2023, Part 2: Jessie Ware, Jockstrap, Lankum, And Loyle Carner | 20230905 | In the second part of three pocket guides, Matt Everitt profiles four of this year's Mercury Award nominated albums, with bespoke & archive interviews as well as deep cuts. The next album he covers in this series is by Jessie Ware. That! Feels Good! is Jessie's fourth album and its a collection of proper dancefloor fillers that are never more than a few pounding beats away from a melodic hook with Jessie sounding like she's having the time of her life. Jockstrap's debut I Love You Jennifer B is easily one of the most surprising, original and sometimes bewildering albums to make the Mercury list. NME described it as 'deconstructed experimental folk-pop funnelled through a post-dubstep and warped electronic style of production. ? London-based duo of Taylor Skye and Georgia Ellery aren't one thing stylistically; the only thing you can expect is that they'll surprise you. Next it's Lankum with their fourth album, False Lankum. Lankum are a Dublin four-piece who's music blends traditional folk and traditional songs, framing them against deep gothic soundscapes, restless, often disconcerting instrumentation, but offset by beautiful melodic dreamlike vocals. They are rightly regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative folk bands around. Finally in this episode, Matt profiles Loyle Carner's highly regarded & bookies favourite, hugo. This album is a journey into Loyle's heart, and at it's core it's about his own relationship with himself, what's expected of him – his relationship with his estranged father, his own role as a father, how he and the world view his mixed-race heritage. Pocket Guides 2023, Part 3: Olivia Dean, Raye, Shygirl, And Young Fathers | 20230906 | In the final part of three pocket guides, Matt Everitt profiles four of this year's Mercury Award nominated albums, with bespoke & archive interviews as well as deep cuts. The next album he covers in this series is by Olivia Dean. Although Messy is her debut, she's been releasing songs since 2018 breaking through with 2021's five track Growth EP. This album is a collection smooth pop soul, organic instrumentation, gentle guitars, slick keyboard washes and occasional tinges of the gospel she was brought up on. Guests on the album include Leon Bridges and she's been tipped for great success by none other than Sir Elton John! RAYE's My 21'st Century Blues is another hottly tipped debut from South London Brit School graduate, Rachel Agatha Keen. It's been a long time in it's gestation too, with her previous record label failing to recognise her talent as a performer and songwriter and refusing to let her release an album of her work. Having cut herself loose from that arrangement this album that she has now finally released is a killer, and it's everything; confidently delivering on a wide range of styles. Next it's Shygirl with her debut album Nymph. It's a seductive, playful and gloriously shame free album, but there's also a less brash side to the songs too. In contrast to earlier single & EP releases, Shygirl showcases more ethereal and fragile elements on this album. Finally in this series, Matt profiles Young Fathers fourth album, Heavy Heavy. They won The Mercury Prize In 2014 for their debut album Dead and stylistically Heavy Heavy is more diverse than anything they've done before. More melodic than it's predecessors in places, and definitely more complex and ambitious in others they are tipped for a good chance of winning again in 2023.
