Chris A'Court with the latest news from the world of personal finance plus advice for those trying to make the most of their money.

Paul Lewis examines the consequences of a prolonged credit squeeze for anyone with a mortgage, loan or savings product.

He is joined by a panel of academics, experts and opinion formers.

The present crisis started in the sub-prime mortgage market in the US and has now spread to the wider economy.

Inflation is at a 16-year high and unemployment is also on the increase.

But there have been some pockets of good news.

With banks eager to bring in more money from depositors, savings rates have been steadily rising.

So what went wrong, how long will the squeeze last and what does it mean for our personal finances?

With guests:

George Magnus, senior economic advisor at the Swiss investment bank UBS

Sir George Cox, former bank director and business leader

Vince Cable MP, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman

Melanie Bien, director at Savills Private Finance

James Brooke, financial planner at Anand Associates

Hundreds of thousand of people who who have used pension freedoms to take lump sums out of their pension funds have been over-taxed by thousands of pounds. New research shared exclusively with Money Box suggests that the Treasury may have had a tax windfall of more than a billion pounds in the two years and a half years since tax freedoms began in April 2015.

Some insurers and brokers are burying key information in renewal notices leaving customers at risk of losing out financially and flouting FCA rules. Since April they have been ordered to show last year's premium in letters and emails about renewals as well as include messages explaining how you could get a better deal.

There is growing concern amongst contractors that the Government is considering extending its blitz on bogus self-employment as part of the Budget in a few weeks time. Public Sector bodies are now responsible for determining whether someone that works for them is truly self-employed or needs to be treated like an employee. It's claimed that the changes have stopped tens of thousands of workers being paid through personal service companies and led to many facing big cuts in their take home pay.

The FCA has told BrightHouse to pay £14.8m in compensation and refunds to 249,000 customers. The action follows the financial regulator's findings that the rent-to-own household goods firm was "not a responsible lender" for failing to properly check whether people who took out agreements between 1 April 2014 and 30 September 2016 would be able to make the required payments. It also found it did not refund customers whose agreements were cancelled before the goods had been delivered but after first payments had been taken. Former BrightHouse branch manager Lois details her experiences of working for the company including how customers were persuaded to take on debt.

People with serious financial problems could get a legally protected six-week breathing space to get advice and repair their finances as part of a plan put out for consultation by the government this week. During that time they wouldn't have to pay other charges, interest on debts or be visited by bailiffs. A similar Debt Arrangement Scheme already operates in Scotland. Mike O'Connor, Chief Executive of the StepChange debt charity and Yvonne MacDermid, Chief Executive of Money Advice Scotland. discuss the practicalities.

As the government launches a review aimed at improving the process of buying a home to make it 'faster and less stressful' reporter Tony Bonsignore investigates the role of conveyancing solicitors. It's an area the review will look at to see what the industry could do to help consumers make more informed decisions when selecting one. Guest: Beth Rudolph from the Conveyancing Association

Rent controls are common across Europe - but do they work? And could they work in the UK? It's a popular idea with voters but detractors say it could destroy the private rental sector.

Nearly a third of private tenants had problems paying their rent, according to a recent report published by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Amid rising concerns about the cost of renting, there are renewed calls for some sort of price cap to limit cost increases - a policy already in progress in Scotland.

For this edition of Money Box Live Adam Shaw examines how bad it's got for tenants and whether rent cap schemes in Germany and Sweden have helped or hindered the market for both landlord and tenant.

A major study from the Social Mobility Commission has detailed the reality for many of Britain's low paid workers. It tracked them over a decade and found a quarter remained in poorly paid work with bleak prospects for improvement. The report was released in the same week as a symbolic vote in Parliament backed a pause in the Universal Credit rollout. Does the structure of Universal Credit miss an opportunity to make work pay? Phil Agulnik, Director of entitledto and David Finch, Senior Economic Analyst with the Resolution Foundation and co-author of the Social Mobility Commission study, discuss.

A review of savings accounts has revealed more products offering higher interest rates. The independent savings advice website savingschampion.co.uk carried out the analysis. Its Director Anna Bowes explains who and what's behind the rise.

A potential fix for a broken energy market has been put forward by the Scottish National Party with plans for a state owned, not-for-profit energy company. The idea is to sell to customers in Scotland as close to cost price as possible. A small number of companies are already doing similar work across Britain. Alister Steele Chair of Our Power and Phil Brennan Head of Energy at the Association for Public Service Excellence discuss how the SNP plan might work in practice.

Thousands of homeowners are now discovering a benefit designed to provide financial support with their mortgages is being scrapped and replaced with the offer of a loan. The end of Support for Mortgage Interest was confirmed in the Summer 2015 Budget, letters confirming the change, which starts next April, are being sent out now. Guest: Jane Tully, Director at the Money Advice Trust

Universal credit is a new benefit which combines six existing means tested benefits. It includes support for the cost of housing, children and childcare, as well as financial support for disabled people, carers and people who are too ill to work.

The aim is to simplify the process of claiming benefit, cut administration and to help people find a job or increase the hours they work.

More than seven million households will be signed up by 2022,

If you receive Universal Credit or you're in the process of applying, Louise Cooper and guests would like to hear from you to find out how it's going. Joining Louise will be:

Black Box technology is regularly touted as a way of reducing car insurance premiums. If the box shows your driving is safe then you qualify for refunds on your premiums. But how does the box determine that your driving is safe? Money Box reporter Tony Bonsignore has discovered that every company has a different way of assessing safe driving and that the digital readings are not always as accurate as they could be.

The Government has published a draft bill to cap energy prices. What will that mean in practice for energy consumers? While two thirds of people who stick with the same supplier will see bills come down, those that "embrace the market" and regularly switch to the best deal may pay more than they otherwise would. Meanwhile some mid-size energy suppliers with many customers on the highest tariffs - the so-called standard variable tariff - may well go out of business.

And is it the end for peer 2 peer lending? One expert warns that risks to investors have 'intensified significantly'.

Losses from financial fraud totalled £768.8m last year and criminals are using increasingly sophisticated methods to target your cash. If you lose money after paying by credit or debit card, there are protections in place which allow for a refund while the matter is investigated.

However if you're tricked by a fraudster into sending cash by bank transfer, which allows for the movement of substantial amounts of money, there's no similar safeguard. Instead banks have a regulatory right to refuse to reimburse if they decide a customer has acted with gross negligence.

How is gross negligence determined and how much responsibility should lie with customers when bank transfers go wrong?

Joining Paul Lewis to discuss are bank fraud consultant Richard Emery, Nikki Worden Partner at Osborne Clarke who specialises in the regulation of financial services for consumers and small businesses and Pete Moorey, Head of Campaigns at Which?

Has your bank account been targeted by fraudsters? Did you manage to get your money back? Call 03700 100 444 between 1pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday 11 October, standard geographic charges from landlines and mobiles will apply.

The disappointing reality of retirement complex living experienced by some residents, once the deal is done and the glossy sales brochure is a distant memory.

Households being switched onto Universal Credit can now get a same-day advance on their benefits. Will this mean an end to delays in receiving their income?

And Open Banking - we're promised it will revolutionise the way we organise our finances. But what exactly is it and how secure will your data be?
