The Shortlist

4/5. The National Short Story Prize is an exciting new annual award which celebrates the contemporary British short story. The winning entry will be announced on May 15 and broadcast live from the ceremony on Radio 4's Front Row. The winning author will receive £15,000, the runner up £3000 - and the other three shortlisted stories £500 each.

Exceeding all expectations, the prize has attracted over 1400 submissions and includes entries by some of the biggest names in British fiction. The five shortlisted stories are:
