After Dark Festival: Deep Night Tracks20220327Sara Mohr-Pietsch and Hannah Peel host an immersive overnight event recorded live at Radio 3's After Dark Festival at Sage Gateshead.

Live performances include a special collaboration between multi-instrumentalist Memotone and his father, the nature writer Chris Yates, who take us on a night walk through moonlit forests and nocturnal landscapes. Manchester Collective perform music spanning 900 years from Hildegard of Bingen to Edmund Finnis, including Arnold Schoenberg's luminous ‘Transfigured Night' and Newcastle-based electronic folk innovator Jayne Dent aka Me Lost Me captures the nocturnal atmosphere with original songs and reworkings of traditional ballads. Plus pianist Xenia Pestova Bennett and composer Ed Bennett invite us to get lost in meditative music by Egidija Medeksaite and Gayle Young, as well as original pieces and a radical reinterpretation of Bach's Goldberg Variations for piano and live electronics.

As dawn approaches, the sound artist and beatboxer Jason Singh presents an evocative soundscape of real, manipulated and vocalised `dawn chorus` birdsong, followed by the Leeds-based sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun, who welcomes the new day with a traditional north Indian dawn raag.

Part of Radio 3's After Dark Festival, a major new live music festival for 2022 in partnership with Sage Gateshead and TUSK Music, featuring some of the biggest names in contemporary, classical and experimental music. For all related content, search `After Dark Festival` on BBC Sounds.

Midnight In The Garden20200818Hannah Peel with an special immersive soundtrack dedicated to the music of plants.

We'll be immersed in musical gardens from Puccini to Radiohead, Debussy to Caroline Shaw, and many more,as well as experimental electronic paeans to the plant world with Stevie Wonder's 'Secret Life of Plants' and electronic pioneer Mort Garson 'Mother's Earth Plantasia

Hannah also mixes in music made with and by the plants themselves - from listening in to the biochemistry of a singing snake plant, to delving beneath the bark of a horse chestnut tree via the Tree Listening Project.

And if you've ever wondered what the avant-garde in the hands (or stalks?) of veg sounds like - then we've got the Vegetable Orchestra who craft their instruments from vegetables creating big beats from their carrot marimbas, gurkeridoos and calabash with parsleysticks...

Music After Dark2020110420210331 (R3)Sara Mohr-Pietsch presents an adventurous, immersive soundtrack for late-night listening, from classical to contemporary and everything in between. As the nights draw in, Sara invites us to explore with her the musical dimensions of a room. She starts with Alvin Lucier's ground-breaking recording, 'I am sitting in a room', which reappears throughout the programme. She moves from the small, intimate rooms of Durante, in his Concerto in G minor for 2 violins and viola, and the close sound of Nakamura's piano recordings, through John Luther Adams' 'In a Room' to the large, cavernous sound of Terje Isungset's 'Essence of Stone 6', which was recorded in the amazing Emanuel Vigeland Mausoleum-Oslo with its extreme 12 second long reverb. As Joan Sutherland sings 'I Dreamt I dwelt in the marble halls', Brian and Roger Eno play from Music for the Marble Palace, the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. At midnight we enter the inner sanctum of Solesmes Abbey with its cathedral-like acoustic, the bells toll the hour and the monks sing Gregorian chant. After hearing the reverberant climax of Alvin Lucier's 'I'm sitting in a Room', we return to the intimate quartet writing of Stenhammar and then end looking out of the room as Joan Baez sings Go 'way from my Window.

Musical Voyage Through Space20201207Hannah Peel takes us on an adventurous night-time journey through the universe in the first of three programmes exploring music for Outer Space and the outer reaches of our minds and imaginations. The solar system has inspired composers from Holst to Brian Eno, Laurie Spiegel, Luening and Dutilleux. Hannah's musical exploration of our universe is accompanied by the sounds of deep space from Jodrell Bank and Nasa, including black holes, meteors and pulsars.

On Tuesday's programme, Hannah focuses on pioneering women with extracts from a personal interview with Dame Jocelyn Bell-Burnell, who discovered pulsars and the music of Delia Derbyshire.

In Wednesday's programme, Hannah ventures further into space and our outer minds, with Tomita's take on Ives's The Unanswered Question and Laurie Spiegel's The Unquestioned Answer.
