Plus, we go on a deer count, learn about vegetable growing and count ladybirds.

We are making the most of autumn and heading out foraging to see what we can find in the great outdoors.

Mark finds out about medieval foraging at Soutra Aisle.

There are plenty fungi out there that are safe to eat, but also plenty that aren't. Helen meets an artist making his own collection of drawings to identify which is which.

The Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh is home to thousands of plants including some edible. Euan heads out to see what he can dig up.

Mark is in Fife visiting a family who make the most of what their smallholding provides and preserve as much as they can for use throughout the year.

Apples are the ultimate autumnal fruit and Mark and Euan head to Perthshire to meet a man who has made a career out of them.

As Halloween approaches Euan tells the tale of the origin of dooking for apples.

Mint is a popular plant but Mark and Euan find out there are lots more varieties than you might think

Perthshire is the ultimate place to see trees in their full autumnal glory so Mark heads out for a walk near Birman.

And our soundscape this week, returning pink footed geese.

The Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh railway runs for 82 miles through some of the most picturesque landscapes of Scotland. It was first built in 1870 as far as Stromeferry on Loch Carron to improve transport links to the Highlands and the West Coast. It was then possible to take a steamer from Stromeferry to Skye and beyond, and this was a key stop for the herring industry. The line was completed to Kyle in 1897 and soon became popular as a tourist route. It has survived various threats of closure during its history, but now is busier than ever.

In this special edition of Out of Doors, Mark and Euan take the trip from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. In Dingwall, they discover the remnants of what was once a significant terminal, especially during the war years. They take a diversion to the spa town of Strathpeffer and learn about the once celebrated waters there. As the country changes into more open hill landscape, they meet outdoor enthusiast Pammy Johal who shares her deep passion for Lochluichart. Onwards to Achnashellach, and a beautiful woodland walk before stopping off for a refreshment at the tiny Strathcarron Brewery. Then a wander around the beautiful Attadale Gardens before visiting the once bustling Stromeferry where riots occurred over fish being transported on a Sunday. And a trip out on a boat from the idyllic village of Plockton before arriving at Kyle of Lochalsh, the gateway to Skye and beyond.

Last week we heard about ambitious plans by the community around Aviemore to take control of the ski facilities at Cairngorm. The plan involves making use of new legislation similar to a community buy out and Euan finds out more from Highlands and Islands Enterprise who help advise communities wanting to buy assets.

In the case of Cairngorm, as well as being the community asset transfer advisors, HIE actually own the land the community is trying to take control of. So Euan speaks to their head of business development about the criticisms they have faced about their ownership of the mountain.

Helen is near Stirling visiting a father and son growing something rather unusual on their farm, tea. She finds out about the challenges they face as well as hearing about the success of Scottish tea growing across the country.

Scotland's first ever national Geoheritage festival is happening right now. Events are being held to promote some of our famous and unique geological sites, as well as the hidden gems. Mark visits one of those sites, Siccar Point and hears from one of the festival organisers.

Sparrowhawks are amazing wee birds of prey. According to research carried out by RSPB Scotland and the Scottish Raptor Study Group it seems nowadays you've got more chance of spotting them in the city than in the country. Euan headed to Edinburgh to try and catch a glimpse of one.

While the site of chairlifts and ski tows being dismantled on Cairngorm is a sad sight, ski enthusiasts are being given the chance to own a little bit of the mountain forever by purchasing a chairlift chair. Euan chats to some of buyers.

Every week we try and bring you a bit of an experiment with sound. This week as gales screamed over Scottish skies Euan headed out with his kit.

Last week Mark sparked off a lively discussion on the subject of shepherd's boots. The boots appeared in an old photograph unearthed in Lanark mart. We wondered if anyone still makes them or even repairs them so Euan headed out to meet a cobbler and find out.

And ahead of our special on the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh railway, we bring you the soothing soundscape of a train trundling down the track.

We get an update from the chair of the Scottish Land Commission Andrew Thin. Last week the commission held its first conference and published its three year plan. Euan finds out more.

We hear from a retired salmon fisherman about what impact he thinks large numbers of seals at Forvie Sands at the mouth of the River Ythan in Aberdeenshire have had on fish numbers. And we also hear from a Senior Research Scientist at the University of St Andrews Callan Duck who monitors the size and status of seal populations across the UK about whether seals really are bad news for fish.

Mark takes a look at some extraordinary photographs from the 1800s found in a cupboard at Lawrie and Symington's Lanark Mart.

Euan is in the Cairngorms finding out about a community bid to take over the running of the ski resort. Some locals are unhappy with the way the mountain has been managed and want to have the chance to reinvigorate the area's skiing.

Mark joins a listener on his favourite short walk on the banks of the River Clyde near Lanark.

A partnership project in the Cairngorms is bringing people together to map the state of our rarer invertebrates. Euan takes a walk in the Abernethy Forest to see if he can spot any interesting creepy crawlies that normally pass us by.

Mark discovers a hidden gem of a nature reserve in the heart of Stenhousemuir with a fascinating history.

And Euan delves into the history book to find out all about the Cruden Bay Railway.
