This week's show reflects Radio 2's Bee Gees Bank Holiday, with tracks from the Bee Gees' four best selling albums in the USA - Saturday Night Fever, Spirits Having Flown, Bee Gees Greatest and the Staying Alive soundtrack LP.

In the regular feature A Matter Of Life And Death, Paul marks the forthcoming birthday on 1st September of Barry Gibb by playing his Top Ten duet with Barbra Streisand - What Kind Of Fool. The Bee Gees' US Number One on this date in 1971 - How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - will also be heard. And the weekly feature, It's Not The Same Old Song, features Words by the Bee Gees and the similarly titled hit by the Monkees.

Paul also highlights two big American hit singles for the group that were not successful in the UK - I Started A Joke and Nights On Broadway - and finds a topical reason for playing (The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts at the beginning of the programme.

The New Album Chart

PAUL GAMBACCINI write's: ' Britain s most popular album of 1979 has been Parallel Lines by Blondie. a collection that has been in the LP chart every week of this year. Producer Mike Chapman has brUHantly mixed the energy of New Wave. the sex appeal of lead singer Deborah iiarry and. in the case of the international No "Heart of Glass", the infectiousness of disco. Four of the numbers have been hit singles in Britain and another has made it in the States. Parallel Lines is the quintessential pop L.P of the late 70s.

with an appreciation of Smokey Robinson

Even before SMOKEY helped to found the Tamla

Motown label in 1957 he was playing and writing songs with the Miracles in a Detroit basement, watched by a young Diana Ross.

As there were only eight employees in the early Tamla days, he was involved in everything and his talents for producing and arranging flourished within the Motown ' family spirit'.

He later introduced Diana Ross to the ' family ' head. Berry Gordy , to start her phenomenally successful career.

On writing he has said,

' I just write about things that people can relate to, and would be the same if I wrote them in 1920 or 2000.' A magic that has been highly successful for him and other major Motown artists

' He was my favourite pop music hero,' says PAUL GAMBACCINI , ' and along with Chuck Berry was one of the first popular singers who wrote their own material. ' He possessed this wonderfully emotive voice, the versatility of which could give a totally new dimension to different songs - ranging from gospel orientated chorals to an earthy, almost sexual sound. 1 Tire diversity of the material he recorded (he had over 14 major hits in the States), made him a master of pop records and a hero for Black America in his time.'

with an appreciation of Rod Stewart

A fanaticism for football, spiked hair and a tendency to hit the popular Sunday papers with his various liaisons, are all characteristics of ' Rod the Mod '.

Undoubtedly his most distinctive feature is his gravel voice, which has stretched from blues and rock 'n' roll to ballads and disco.

As a vocalist he has fronted a number of bands, the most notable being The Faces, with whom he enjoyed the most success.

' Jimmy Page - a maestro on guttar - Robert Plant 's very powerful blues-influenced voice and an ability to write better songs ' sets

Zeppelin apart from their heavy-rock peers, and in PAUL'S mind makes them ' the primary heavy group of all time '.

' " Whole lotta love " has to be the most erotic rock 'n' roll record and " Stairway to heaven " the perennial favourite rock track on rock stations around the world.'

And that one, he assures, will be played in its entirety.

with an appreciation of Isaac Hayes

' Hot buttered soul the title of Hayes' most notable album, is an apt description of the man himself. PAUL GAMBACCINI explains:

1 He was a sex symbol and a near religious figure to a lot of black people, who called him Black Moses. He would appear on stage in a floor-length robe with a hood - it was a strange sight.'

He is probably best-known here for the theme music of the film Shaft, the success of which rejuvenated his then flagging career. ' That was a revolutionary record, with the guitar featured so prominently. One could say that he brought rock and black music closer together.'

with an appreciation of Chuck Berry

An hour is barely long enough to look at one of the great pioneers of rock 'n' roll, but PAUL GAMBACCINI sums up:

' He was the first rock star to really sing and write in the language of the teenager about the things on their minds, and put it all down in a very clever rhyming scheme. He made sure that all the lyrics could be heard clearly - ensuring radio play. a point where so many other Black artists failed. His songs have also been covered more than other pioneers.

' I have a great deal of respect for him.'

When Mick Janger sang I 1 can't net no satisfaction you believed it.

An appreciation of The

Rolling Stones, the group that the Press hailed as the wild answer to The Beatles. with an appreciation of Diana Ross , who was not only the ' first lady of Motown for 17 years, but the most popular female singer in America, becoming a figure of great personal importance to many people.' Of her split with The Supremes, Paul says: 'The Supremes of course had the most incredible series of hits; she as a soloist lacked the same consistency because she could only be as good as the material written for her. No matter how great you are, you just embellish good material.

' Allegedly,

Florence Ballard was pushed out of The Supremes because she was a threat from within the group in terms of fan response. The rot already having set in, it was only natural that the apple of Berry Gordy 's eye should go solo.'

with an appreciation of Billy Joel

Of the best-selling vocalist in the USA for the past three years he says: ' There are some people who think rhyming " coming in with " tonic and gin " in " Piano Man " was one of the most forced rhymes in the history of the language. but some of his best stuff is as good as anybody's. His album " The Stranger is a masterpiece.

' Like me. he's a New Yorker and one thing about New York is that it's so full of sensory images you're almost destined to suffer from sensory overload. There's so much there for writers like Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen. Strangely enough Joel's is mostly ballad material. but he likes to think of himself as a rocker.'

with an appreciation of Otis Redding

' He was a rare talent: you could see him strut across the stage as he snarled " I can't turn you loose " or haunt you with a moving ballad like " That's how strong my love is ".

' As a live performer he was electrifying: the excitement of his performances comes through on albums.

' What he could do to a song was unreal, witness " Try a little tenderness " which he seems to take into another universe.

Unfortunately he was not fading out as a singer when he died: the record released after the crash, " Dock of the bay ", was his greatest pop hit. There would clearly have been a lot more of value to come but he died at the age of 23 having achieved incredible things'

with an appreciation of The Beach Boys

No other American group has come to be so closely associated with a particular life style in the way that The Beach Boys have.

Their main songwriter, Brian Wilson had an amazing knack of conveying on record the sun and sea life style enjoyed by Californian teenagers. The dream they offered was lost when Wilson's experiments with drugs damaged his mind.

Nevertheless they are as popular as ever in the USA. The tremendous size of their concert audiences suggests not so much that the fans are unaware that they haven't had an original big hit in years, but that the appeal of The Beach Boys' fantasy is timeless.'

with an appreciation of Stevie Wonder

' He was certainly one of the most important black composer/performers of all time, perhaps the most important. His versatility both in terms of composition and in the playing of instruments is unrivalled. He's had 22 Top Ten hit records in the USA - more than anyone else except Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Slevie

Wonder burst on the scene with a live recording " Fingertips made when he was 12 years old. As a teenager he was a good maker of pop songs and then he won his freedom within the structure of Motown and produced. wrote and performed a classic series ofLPS in the early 70s. He stumbled with the soundtrack called " The secret life of plants " over which he took far too much time and during which the spontaneity and melody of his music was lost, but he returned in brilliant form with his latest album " Hotter than July ".'

* He was the original rock music guitar hero although Hank Marvin and blues players would have been his influences. He suddenly captured the public's fancy in the mid-60s. After his work with John Mayall he came to international prominence with Cream, had a brief stint with Blind Faith , followed by his spectacular album " Layla ". In recent years he's mellowed, coming under the influence of country musicians like

Don Williams. He still plays well but many fans want him to play in the ferocious style which lit his rock recordings.' Producer TEDDY WARRICK

with an appreciation of The Drifters

They pre-date Motown and the Memphis sound by a decade and as such are the seminal rhythm and blues crossover hit singles group.

' The string of hits they accumulated with a variety of lead singers in the 50s and early 60s is astonishing. First there was the beautiful falsetto of Clyde McPhatter ; then the very different and very stirring Ben E. King ; followed by two other not so famous, but equally effective, lead singers - Rudy Lewis and Johnny Moore.

' " There goes my baby " was very important as the first rhythm and blues big hit to have an orchestral section. And they have had so many great songs that are just classic sentiments of teenage life. In the 70s they gained a new lease of life in Britain with a few hits written and produced here but their international success and importance lies in the 50s and early 60s.'

with an appreciation of Bob Dylan

' He is certainly the most Important American artist of the 60s and also my personal pop music hero.

1 It's hard to imagine how someone could write so much brilliant material. So many LPS are full of classics and " Like a rolling stone " was the anthem for the American generation of the 60s.

' Dylan always had the courage to change. People who have criticised him for his current religious bent forget that it was equally courageous for him to introduce electronic instruments to his folk music and country and western as he did in " Nashville Skyline". It just so happens that the previous twists were well received. This one is not chic. Dylan is still as courageous as ever but he no longer speaks for the great numbers of people he used to.'

'He was openly androgynous and bisexual before it was chic to be either of those things. He inspired both punks and new romantics and virtually started "glam rock" in the early 70s. He pioneered the use of synthesised instruments by a major pop artist and managed to appeal to heavy metal fans. Through it all he generated an awe-inspiring series of hit singles. It was quite an achievement to go through all those changes and still turn out the hits. He was certainly the most influential British artist of the 70s and it is not surprising that he should have scored such a success on Broadway in The Elephant Man because he had already proved he was a multi-talented gentleman.'

' They are a group for wliom. I have much affection because they made some great records: one feels they coutd have made a good many more. ' Eric Burdon has one of the greatest blues voices of our time and it is especially surprising coming from the throat of a white man. Listening to him howl " House of the rising sun " it's hard to believe the sound comes from a human being and a Newcastle boy at that.

' They made a series of records some of which, like It's my life and " We've got to get out of this place ". were very much in keeping with the rebellious mood of the mid-60s. And some of which, like " Sky pilot and " San Franciscan nights were very much in the flower power and acid rock sensibility of the late 60s.'

with an appreciation of Paul Simon

' Paul Simon 's albums, both with Art Garfunkel and as a soloist, have always been immaculately produced. An extremely talented songwriter, he greatly appeals to rock critics. " American tune " was the best comment made on Watergate in any form or medium. It was both brilliant and oblique. " Bridge over troubled water " was Britain's number one selling album of the 70s. It's hard to imagine a song touching people as deeply as that did. It's fascinating how he made the preoccupations of the educated upper-middle class seem universally relevant.

He stumbled with " One trick pony " but the " There goes rhymin'

' Like the Drifters in the 50s, they kept changing lead singers. Their peak came when David Ruffin , the gravel-throated singer. and Eddie Kendricks. the falsetto tenor, traded lead vocals to maximum effect. To have performed the original versions of " My girl","Ain'ttoproud to beg " and " I wish it would rain " and then with an almost totally new lineup to have performed " Papa was a rollin' stone ", shows their ability to adapt and survive. ' She is the major female pop songwriter of the 60s who turned out a series of wonderful hits for a wide variety of artists and shocked everyone by releasing an all-time classic LP of her own in 1971 - that being

" Tapestry ". Her hit single of the early 60s " It might as well rain until September " had not shown evidence of her vocal ability, of her skill at the piano and of the way she could breathe into her songs that extra amount of meaning that can only come from the person who wrote it. She made several more fine tracks in the 70s but no album to equal

" Tapestrv which remains the finest album ever from a female singer-songwriter.'

with an appreciation of Elvis Presley

He is the single most important artist in the history of rock and roll. More than that he is a cultural phenomenon of the last half of the 20th century. His synthesis of rhythm and blues and country and western introduced a rich and large field of music to millions and inspired a generation of stars. He was the figurehead of a commercially important youth culture unlike any the western world had previously seen. The quality and power of his records was diluted after he returned from the army but he was still capable of the occasional classic and his early work remains among the very best in popular music,'
