2502The Spy Novel20161112

Phil Rickman explores the secretive and fantastical world of spy and espionage fiction, and asks why the dearth of contemporary novels in this genre? Could it be that the legacy of John Le Carre is just too daunting for the majority of writers? Phil's guests include Le Carre's official biographer, Adam Sisman, who has got to know Le Carre (aka David Cornwell) exceptionally well, and who assesses Le Carre's recent volume of reminiscences, The Pigeon Tunnel. Veteran journalist and author Gerald Seymour prefers to concentrate on hapless operatives rather than the world of Le Carre's cold war spymasters. He talks to Phil about his latest novel, No Mortal Thing, in which he explores the frightening world of one of Italy's least known, but most successful mafia groups: 'Ndranghetta. A young banker from London is drawn into waging a private war of revenge on a deadly mafia clan. Spy fiction of a very different kind is on offer with Mick Herron. In his Real Tigers novel he uses the setting of a dusty, down-at-heel branch of MI5 ('slow horses') to comment on office politics as much as on any real dangers to the state at large.

Jilly Cooper talks about her recent novel Mount featuring her highly sexed anti-hero Rupert Campbell-Black and an even more highly-sexed stallion called Love Rat. Author and journalist Lynne Truss (Eats Shoots and Leaves) talks about the Lunar Cats - a novel featuring a learned society of evil talking cats. Nick Perry has written an hilarious memoir about organic upland hill-farming in Caernarfon during the early 1970s. Author Phil Rickman returns for a new series exploring the fascinating world of books.

Phil Rickman takes a psychedelic trip back to the summer of love in 1967 and a summer of change in 1989. Former Nirvana manager and rock music veteran, Danny Goldberg revisits his hazy memories of California in the 60s through his book 'In Search of the Lost Chord'. Dr Nicholas Campion, a specialist in the study of cosmology in culture, explains the 'Age of Aquarius' and counterculture in his book 'The New Age in the Modern West'. Meanwhile, in 1989, another summer of global flux before the collapse of the Berlin Wall and apartheid in South Africa, Patrick Harpur sets the scene for strange events in his novel 'The Good People'.
