1/4. A Pickerskill Excursion

In an attempt to illustrate the finality of death to three disrespectful boys, Dr Pickerskill persuades them to lock him in a tomb. And when Pickerskill attempts to educate school bully Stealgroynes about the dangers of dunking freshmen, he discovers that the boy is just as much at home in the water as out of it.

Pickerskill receives four boys into his detention after theyve been caught selling cigarettes to minors. He decides to engage them completely in a concentrated, practical application of supply and demand. Pickerskill sets up a market place in detention to teach them that cigarettes must be smoked if they're to make them any money.

Pickerskill recalls a detention from 1941. Augustus Calman's father is the Under-Minister of Wartime Provisions and ensures his son gets only the best food. When the boy is sent to detention for selling on high class provisions, Calman soon discovers his father's black market connections are no match for the Luftwaffe.
