Continuing the focus on the UK's musical youth, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and their chief conductor Donald Runnicles are joined by the young players of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland and former NYOS Leader Nicola Benedetti in a sparkling programme orchestral showpieces.

A celebration of Scottish musical talent, tonight's concert includes music by two of Scotland's finest composers, including the London premiere of James MacMillan's Fanfare Upon One Note and the world premiere of Thea Musgrave's Loch Ness: a Postcard from Scotland. Alongside these works, the two groups join forces in music of drama and romanticism, emblematic of Donald Runnicles' musical personality, in Wagner's Overture to Die Meistersinger, Strauss's Don Juan and Respighi's grandly colourful tone-poem, Pines of Rome. Nicola Benedetti joins them for Bruch's romantically lyrical Scottish Fantasy.

Sir Andrew Davis returns to the BBC Proms as Conductor Laureate of the BBC Symphony Orchestra with a typically wide-ranging programme of music whose pairings reflect musical homages. 'Mozart always smiled; his music also smiled,' said Messiaen of Mozart - which explains the title of his Mozart tribute Un sourire. That prefaces one of Mozart's ebullient piano concertos, and the second half of the concert couples one of Brahms's greatest works with a tribute from one of his English admirers

The sea lies the centre of tonight's concert from Sir Mark Elder and the Hall退. The sunshine glitters on the waves of Berlioz's swashbuckling overture Le corsaire, written while the composer was holidaying in Nice.

A celebrated Elgar champion, Elder is joined by British mezzo-soprano Alice Coote for Sea Pictures: Elgar's only orchestral song-cycle, which ebbs and flows evocatively as it explores the fascination and fear inspired by the sea. While Helen Grime's Near Midnight explores a nocturnal theme, Beethoven created a storm of human drama in his 'Eroica' Symphony - a stirring musical meditation on heroism and valour.

The BBC Philharmonic and its Principal Guest Conductor return to the Royal Albert Hall for the first Proms performance of Korngold's Symphony. Dedicated to the memory of Franklin D Roosevelt, the symphony refers back to Korngold's score for the 1939 Errol Flynn and Bette Davis romance 'The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex'. Rubbra's 'Ode to the Queen' and Walton's 'Orb and Sceptre' celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation, while Vilde Frang joins Storg倀rds and the orchestra for Bruch's ever-popular Violin Concerto.

John Storgards conducts the BBC Philharmonic in music by Walton, Rubbra and Bruch.
