Three short choral pieces by György Ligeti - including Lux aeterna, heard in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey - take us to ethereal heights, while Ligeti himself recognised the mesmeric, free-floating character of Rued Langgaard's 1918 Music of the Spheres as prefiguring his own style. Tchaikovsky's captivating concerto and Sibelius's Fifth Symphony, overwhelming in its nobly expansive final-movement 'Swan Hymn' climax, complete the evening. 01 | Liszt, Gliere | 20110810 | PROMS 2011 Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London Presented by Louise Fryer The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Karabits perform three colourful scores, two of them with connections to Karabits's Ukrainian homeland. The concert begins with a swashbuckling tone-poem by Liszt telling the story of a legendary Ukrainian, Mazeppa, and it ends with Rachmaninov's most famous (and most lyrical) symphony. Between them comes a real novelty - a melody-filled concerto for wordless soprano and orchestra by Ukrainian-born composer Reinhold Gli耀re. The effervescent Irish soprano Ailish Tynan takes the extraordinary solo part. Kirill Karabits has been Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for two seasons now and their relationship is blossoming into something rather special. Sir Peter Maxwell Davies: Caroline Mathilde - suite from Act 2 Walton: Violin Concerto 8.00pm Interval 8.20pm Sibelius: The Swan of Tuonela Sibelius: Symphony No. 5 in E flat major Mary Bevan (soprano) Kitty Whately (mezzo-soprano) (Proms debut artist & New Generation Artist) James Ehnes (violin) Thomas Sønderg倀rd (conductor) Commissioned by Jascha Heifetz, Walton's concerto extended the possibilities of what could be achieved on the violin, while at the same time maintaining a striking intimacy and emotional directness. Thomas Sønderg倀rd and BBC NOW open with a suite from Sir Peter Maxwell Davies's ballet Caroline Mathilde, in which the English princess is sent to an unhappy marriage in Denmark. Caroline Mathilde was written for The Danish Royal Ballet and premiered in 1991 in Copenhagen, with tonight's conductor playing percussion at the back of the orchestra in the pit. Sibelius had a painting of a flight of swans hung on the wall of his study, and these birds inspired the two great orchestral canvases in this concert - in the majestic 'swan theme' appears at the culmination of his Fifth symphony, and in a more serene and mystical way in the Swan of Tuonela. Two symphonies by Sibelius frame the concert. Grieg's only complete Piano Concerto is played by Steven Osborne, and two composer anniversaries are celebrated with music by Per Nørg倀rd and Frederick Delius. As Per Nørg倀rd's celebrates his 80th birthday the Proms presents his exciting and unpredictable 7th symphony, composed for the opening of Copenhagen's new concert hall. Storg倀rds also champions music by British composers, turning the spotlight tonight on Delius in his 150th anniversary year. His evocative setting of words by Ernest Dowson is brought to life by baritone Roderick Williams.
