Prom 51 [BBC Proms]

Glinka's much-loved and exuberant overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila heads a programme which also includes a fasinating new work by Emily Howard and a monumental, barnstorming symphony by Shostakovich.

Emily Howard's Calculus of the Nervous Sysytem has already received high acclaim at the 2011 Wien Modern Festival. Howard took her inspiration from Ada Lovelace, who was the pioneering mathematician daughter of Lord Byron, and the work's starting point was Lovelace's desire to generate a mathematical model for how the brain gives rise to thoughts, and nerves to feelings. Shostakovich's massive Seventh Symphony in C major, the 'Leningrad', was completed during the Second World War in December 1941, as German troops advanced deep into the city. The CBSO is conducted by its Music Director, Andris Nelsons.

Returning for a second appearance this summer, Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra bring a piece of America with them in Barber's Essay No. 2 - a symphony in miniature, moving from lyrical loveliness through contrapuntal conflict to end with a radiant chorale. They pair it with Haydn's Symphony No.90, where ebullient mischief and dignity vie for supremacy in sunny C major. Joy gives way to high drama, however, in Shostakovich's Symphony No.10 - a vivid portrait of Stalinist Russia.

A trio of Dvorကk's colourful, folk-inspired Slavonic Dances opens the concert and Grieg's Piano Concerto, with its lively dance-themed finale and Norwegian folk echoes, continues the mood; the soloist is BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Zhang Zuo, making her Proms debut.

The concert ends in the Ulster Orchestra's Irish musical heartland with Bax's tone-poem Roscatha and Bill Whelan's new Riverdance suite - adapted from his music for the ever-popular stage show.

What was to have been the latest Proms appearance by Sir Colin Davis becomes, following his death earlier this year, a concert honouring his memory. Taking over as conductor, Daniel Harding performs music by the modern British composer with whom Sir Colin was perhaps most associated - Michael Tippett - including in his programme Tippett's wonderfully vigorous, energetic and inventive Concerto for strings. This year's Britten centenary is marked in his white-hot 1940 song-cycle to words by the precocious teenage poet, surrealist and libertine Arthur Rimbaud. Concluding the concert, the magisterial Second Symphony by the grandfather of 20th-century English music, Edward Elgar.

Swedish soprano Nina Stemme sings Berlioz's tender songs of love sought, found and lost with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, րrebro, conducted by Thomas Dausgaard. Also in the programme, romantic symphonies by Schumann and a new work by Albert Schnelzer.

Eight years before he began his First Symphony in 1841, Schumann began an earlier one. Thomas Dausgaard - who has recorded a complete Schumann cycle with his agile Swedish Chamber Orchestra - opens with its sprightly first movement and ends the Proms' Schumann bicentenary symphony cycle with the biggest and most stirring of the set. Swedish composer Albert Schnelzer pays tribute both to Haydn's playful character and to film director Tim Burton, born in the Californian city of Burbank.

Wagner, Liszt and Brahms's First Symphony from Thomas Dausgaard and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, plus the world premiere of Kevin Volans's Piano Concerto for soloist Barry Douglas.

After the familiar strains of Wagner's rousing overture there's a real rarity: Liszt's La notte is an extended version of a piano piece from the Ann退es de p耀lerinage to which the composer added a middle section recalling his Hungarian roots. A late work that he wanted played at his own funeral, it is new to the Proms. So too is Kevin Volans's concerto, hot off the press and written for tonight's soloist. Expect the unexpected from a creative figure born in South Africa but now resident in Ireland whose output resists compartmentalisation.

The long shadow of Ludwig van Beethoven inhibited Brahms's early attempts at symphonic writing but he surpassed all expectations with the magnificence of his First Symphony.
