The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra performs with joint Artistic Director Isabelle van Keulen and Principal Guest Director Leif Ove Andsnes leading from violin and piano respectively. Two contrasting works by Mozart - the sparkling 'Haffner' Symphony and the more dramatic C minor Piano Concerto - frame Scandinavian pieces new and old: Grieg's beloved string-orchestra classic and Danish Bent Sørensen's new piano concerto, La mattina, which the composer regards as containing both his 'darkest and most profound' music.

Shostakovich's Orango - an incomplete opera whose manuscript came to light only in 2004 - is a glossy fusion of wit and political venom. The 'Orango' of the title is half man, half ape - a symbol of the decadent West. It's a work matched for vivid colouring by Bart　k's violent and sexually charged ballet-pantomime The Miraculous Mandarin. French pianist David Fray returns following his Proms debut in 2011 to play Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 - written at the height of the composer's fame in Vienna as a performer of his own works.

The second of two concerts by Ivကn Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra launches the Proms series of Brahms's symphonies. While the intimate, autumnal Third was inspired by a visit to the Rhine in 1883, the noble stature of the Fourth was dismissed by the composer as 'a few entr'actes and polkas which I happened to have lying about', despite it containing one of the most richly lyrical slow movements Brahms ever wrote.

Tonights Prom features the Rotterdam Philharmonic and opens with a tale of doomed love in Tchaikovsky's Fantasy-Overture 'Romeo and Juliet', conducted by the orchestra's charismatic Canadian Music Director Yannick N退zet-S退guin. They are then joined by Italian soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci for Wagner's 'Wesendonck Lieder', a song-cycle written by the composer while he was infatuated with Mathilde Wesendonck, the author of the poems, and the wife of Wagner's patron. The second half of the concert is devoted to Prokofiev's bright and energetic Fifth Symphony in B flat major.

Sir Colin Davis conducts an orchestra of brilliant young musicians in a programme which ranges from Stravinsky's so-called 'war symphony' via the heady orientalism of Ravel to the dramatic Fate motif of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony. The leading American mezzo soprano, Susan Graham joins them for Ravel's vision of the Orient, which is by turns sensuous, voluptuous and erotic.
