The young French pianist, David Fray, makes his Proms debut playing a grandly imposing Mozart concerto, and Jaap Van Zweden conducts Bruckner's Eighth Symphony - a momentous musical journey from darkness to life.

Tonight's conductor, Jaap van Zweden, was the youngest ever concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and in that role played almost all the Bruckner symphonies under some of the greatest Bruckner interpreters. Now the conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, he has been recording his own critically-acclaimed cycle of the Bruckner symphonies.

Glyndebourne Festival Opera comes to the Proms with its new production of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, with Vito Priante as Figaro, Lydia Teuscher as Susanna, Sally Matthews as the Countess, and Audun Iversen as the Count. When Count Almaviva takes an over-eager interest in his cunning manservant's wife-to-be, he sets off an elaborate train of events and finds himself thwarted many times. But after a day of madness and a night of confusion, everything ends more or less happily.

Since its inception, opera at Glyndebourne has been almost synonymous with Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro was the first work to be performed there, in May 1934. Servants outwit their master again in this latest production, new for 2012, which confirms a recent preference for period instruments.

Based on Herman Melville's novella, the opera tells the story of a young sailor who is persecuted by the predatory master-at-arms John Claggart. His only hope of salvation is Captain 'Stary' Vere who is too rule-bound to help him. Jacques Imbrailo sings the innocent Budd, with Brindley Sherratt and Mark Padmore as Claggart and Vere.

It has been almost a decade since the San Francisco Symphony visited the Proms. The orchestra is joined by its Music Director of more than 20 years, Michael Tilson Thomas, and by American pianist Jeremy Denk in the latter's second concert of the season. Here Denk tackles an American rarity - Henry Cowell's extraordinary Piano Concerto, whose primitive textures require the soloist to pound the piano with fists and forearms. It is paired with Mahler's First Symphony, an ebullient youthful work filled with hints of the mature composer to come, and Schoenberg's imaginative Theme and Variations, heard in the composer's own orchestral arrangement.

Italian sunshine floods the Royal Albert Hall Tonight's Prom - with a Swiss conductor, a British orchestra, and music by an Italian, an Englishman and (first) a Frenchman. Hector Berlioz's opera Benvenuto Cellini - featuring the riotous Roman Carnival from which he took the Overture we'll hear tonight - was inspired by Berlioz's experiences during eighteen months in Italy after winning the French Prix de Rome in 1830. Ottorino Respighi settled in Rome for most of his adult life, and celebrated his adopted city in a triptych of increasingly flamboyant orchestral showpieces - depicting not just fountains, pines and festivals, but the children of Rome at play, the mysterious catacombs and the ancient Roman legions on the march. Charles Dutoit offers a rare chance to hear all three works in sequence. William Walton - one of the featured composers in the 2014 BBC Proms - dedicated the three movements of his original Sinfonia concertante to the three Sitwell siblings, Osbert, Edith and Sacheverell, who took him under their wing and (crucially) introduced him to Italy. 'I've never forgotten it,' Walton said of the experience of emerging from a tunnel under the Alps into the Italian sunlight: 'a new world'.

Making his Proms debut, the BBC Concert Orchestra's new Principal Conductor Keith Lockhart brings some American dazzle to the Royal Albert Hall, along with some classic pieces associated with his other orchestra, the Boston Pops. The programme includes a BBC commission from Graham Fitkin, who has composed PK for combined forces of the BBC Concert Orchestra and a family community group of musicians from Cornwall where he lives.
