The Royal Scottish National Orchestra and its French-born Music Director, St退phane Den耀ve, are joined by Paul Lewis as he completes his cycle of the five Beethoven piano concertos with the last and most proudly majestic of them all.

Also featured are spectacular orchestral showpieces by Berlioz and Respighi, inspired respectively by Rome's lively street life and its imperial past; and cementing Celtic connections, the RSNO introduces a recent symphonic suite drawn from the Scottish composer James MacMillan's opera The Sacrifice, inspired by the medieval folk tales of The Mabinogion and premiered to great acclaim in 2007.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly in their second Prom perform Messiaen's dramatic 1964 memorial to the dead of two world wars, Et exspecto resurrectionem mortuorum, and Mahler's 6th Symphony which is a similarly wide-ranging soundscape moving from death-portending hammer-blows to alpine cow-bells. It also contains one of Mahler's most glorious slow movements.

Together with the Turangalila Symphony, Messiaen's Et Expecto is one of his most often performed orchestral works. It is on a vast canvas with a wide dynamic range, full of orchestral effects and apocalyptic gongs. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra is one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world. Riccardo Chially has been their conductor since 2005.

In their second Proms appearance this summer Vasily Petrenko and the Oslo Philharmonic explore the Romantic landscape and Schubertian echoes of Bruckner's Fourth Symphony. Repeatedly revised by the composer during his lifetime, the symphony opens with a radiant sunrise.

Last heard playing Brahms with the Signum Quartet (PCM 7), Christian Ihle Hadland joins Petrenko and the orchestra for Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto, built on the Mozartian model but already pointing to the bold gestures of the composer's maturity.

The Cleveland Orchestra begins its second concert at the BBC Proms featuring music by Brahms and J怀rg Widmann with Brahms's Tragic Overture, a work which lives up to its name with turbulent intensity. This year's cycle of Brahms symphonies is brought to a conclusion with a performance of the sunny Second. The composer was in unusually high spirits while composing it, joking with his publisher, 'I have never written anything so sad'. The result, in fact, sets aside Brahms's habitual seriousness and dramatic tensions in an open-hearted score of great warmth and appeal. In between these two works is young German J怀rg Widmann's Teufel Amor - a musical account of the contradictions, tensions and resolutions of love, inspired by Schiller's lost poem.

This year's free Prom is an ideal opportunity to introduce family and friends to classical music. Carmina burana is as musically inventive as it is irreverent - a choral cantata based on a medieval text charting the joys, fickleness and excesses of human life. The BBC Concert Orchestra's Composer-in-Association Guy Barker provides a new concerto for trumpet virtuoso Alison Balsom and the orchestra's own Charles Mutter is the soloist in Saint-Sa뀀ns's devilish Danse macabre.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra returns for the second of two concerts with its Music Director Manfred Honeck. Mahler's turbulent Fifth Symphony is the main work. Written whilst he was recuperating from a sudden life-threatening illness, it is full of nostalgia. The famous Adagietto leads into a wonderfully transformative final movement. Before this the orchestra are joined by the celebrated German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter for 'Time Chant' - a never ending aria by her compatriot, Wolfgang Rihm. Wagner's ethereal Prelude to Lohengrin opens the programme.
