19980830Michael Billington remembers composer Hanns Eisler, whose Marxist convictions led to his exile from Germany when the Nazis came to power - and to his extradition from the UNITED STATES in 1948, after he apeared before the notorious congressional committee on un-American activities. Eisler believed that music should be a force for change: his output embraced Communist marching songs, the East German national anthem and Hollywood film scores. But he also composed intricately crafted chamber music and lieder. With contributions fro David Blake, Erik Levi, John Willett, Albrecht Dumling, Gisela May and Steffi Eisler.
