Jarvis Cocker, performs a live session with his band.

Jarvis Cocker has been making music for two-thirds of his life. Two dozen of these years (1978 - 2002) were spent in Pulp, a band which became the country's slowest overnight sensation during a heady period book-ended by their Glastonbury headline slot in 1995.

After Pulp, Jarvis consoled himself with semi-retirement, moving to Paris, making occasional media appearances to talk about Outsider Art, Scott Walker or other personal crusades, and sometimes writing songs for others (including Marianne Faithfull, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Nancy Sinatra, Air, and a Harry Potter film).

His debut solo album appeared at the end of 2006 and Jarvis released the anticipated follow-up last month, which he recorded with Steve Albini in Chicago.

With a live session from the Brooklyn trio Au Revoir Simone.

Made principally using keyboards, drum machines and hand percussion, Au Revoir Simone's sound is defined by their instrumentation. In their own words, they make "warm and organic electronic music with forthright female vocalists". Their debut mini album Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation was recorded in Brooklyn, in their friend/producer/manager Rod's basement apartment (recorded in a former shower stall rigged up with quilts and fancy microphones to resemble a vocal booth).

Mark and Stuart have Seasick Steve in session, the American bluesman who's following the success of his last top 10 album with the release of Man From Another Time.

Steve used a variety of favourite guitars on the album including a one-string Diddley-bo (a 2x4 with a string nailed to it), a guitar made out of an old cigar box (with four strings), his 3-string guitar and an old beat-up acoustic guitar. True to the album title, his array of guitars were complimented by a tattered 50s amp, old 40s ribbon mics and other weird and wonderful vintage microphones. The natural sounds and echoes of the recording rooms were used for reverb and any delays were done with tape.

Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie begin their weekly discussions about BBC Two's new six-part music series I'm In A Rock 'n' Roll Band!, which investigates what makes the "perfect" rock group.

Starting today and over the next five weeks, Mark and Stuart review each episode of the series on their show, continuing the debate raised by that week's TV programme. Is a drum solo ever justified? Does every member of the band secretly want to be someone else? Was there such a thing as a "front man" before Mick Jagger?

The TV series, narrated by Mark Radcliffe, delves into the world of rock 'n' roll bands, dissecting the roles of the individual members to look at what makes them tick. It then pieces the band back together, investigating the secrets of their success, culminating in a live studio show on June 5.

In tonight's programme, Mark and Stuart feature clips from the TV programme and bring the debate to BBC Radio 2's listeners, encouraging them to take part in the online poll and vote for their ultimate rock 'n' roll musician.

Alongside the content on BBC Two and Radio 2, fans will also have the opportunity to get involved with an online poll at bbc.co.uk.
