' I know there's a lot of people out in Radio 1 land who've either problems they want to talk about or serious views they want to air. These are the things we want to cover in the new Mailbag. But I want the show to be light-hearted, too, so I'd like to hear some funny letters. I hope we'll get a few jokes, misprints in papers, that sort of thing. If we deserve a bouquet, let me know, but if it's a cabbage we've earned, well, let's have it! '

Tonight's Highlight: the results of the Film Criticism Competition

For the past few weeks Mailbag listeners across the country have been sitting in gloomy cinemas or goggling at ancient movies on the box and writing their own reviews. Tonight Annie will pick out the winning criticisms from the dozens that have been sent in: winners will be awarded tickets to films of their choice playing in their area, runners-up will receive T-shirts. Listen in to find out whether the modern pictures or the golden-oldies win the day. Send your problems, comments, questions and criticisms to: Radio 1 Mailbag, BBC, [Address removed]

Mailbag feature coming up in future:

Two ace motorbike riders, PETER WILLIAMS , ex-speed-way rider, and GEORGE BAILEY of the Magnificent Seven stunt team are going to ride from Broadcasting House to Brands Hatch. Mailbag will follow their progress and on the way Peter and George will talk about getting the best out of your bike and enjoying the pleasures of defensive driving.

Casablanca as reviewed for the recent Mailbag Film Criticism Competition:

' I've often thought that if fate should have me stranded on a desert island with my faithful bear Sugar Puff, a limitless supply of liquorice all-sorts and the film Casablanca I'd be perfectly content.

' Although I am essentially a child of the 70s I still enjoy the style and elegance radiated by this film. The pianist playing on his tinkling piano as eyes meet across a smoky nightclub, a Paris station engulfed by the steam of a departing train, two lovers toasting each other from an endless flow of champagne: this is how life and love should but never can be-misty and sparkling.'

' To prove true superiority in arm wrestling. first the right and then the left arm should be used.

In the half Indian the unused hands should be clasped as well and placed between the elbows on the table. This is to make it more difficult for either person to maim the other under the table with gun or knife without warning.

' The winner is the wrestler to force his opponent's knuckles on to the table top. If done correctly, of course. there should be a pair of strategically placed candles on the table. The loser then gets the back of his hand roasted and often a fresh surge of strength from somewhere . 7

' suggest Christianity is a minority subject. The truth is, it's always been a minority subject except that those with the "voices" have the say.... It's all right for one Jesus to die 2,000 years ago but about 200 million have gone this century alone and we don't seem to be any nearer the kingdom of heaven as far as I can see ... The devil doesn't build bombs for God's wars - men do, And it's men who let them off.'

' I was always under the misapprehension that the British male was solid, reliable, considerate, sincere and a born gentleman. That, I might tell you, is absolute baloney. They are in fact rude, inconsiderate, weak and most unreliable. The men nowadays have got so used to women being women's libbers that they have forgotten how to treat a woman like a lady ... There is nothing nicer than to be courted in an old-fashioned respectable way.'

' The British girl is no English rose as is often depicted by visitors from abroad. She seems to have a one-track mind, concerning clothing and the poor types of pop music, especially in conversation with other people. The modern girl is droopy-shouldered. feeble-minded, unintelligent and totally incapable of making up her mind on any point.'

Mailbag Special:

Is Christianity Eyewashf Anne Nightingale tackles a group of Christians about their faith and how it affects their lives. Guests will include a 'professional Christian' and a number of young believers. Anne will be picking questions from the letters listeners sent in about Christianity: How do you know God exists?

How do your beliefs affect your behaviour?

Does the Christian today really turn the other cheek?

If there is a heaven is there really a hell?

Why does God allow wars and disasters to happen? Producer simon major

Recent letters expressed the following views:

' Surely abortion is an issue which affects the woman or the couple concerned and the decision should be made without any pressure on either side. I believe that every woman who sincerely wants an abortion should be allowed to have one. An abortion is not an easy way out of a pregnancy and I think that no woman goes through the trauma of obtaining one unless she feels it's truly necessary.' ' In contemporary society one of our most important obligations is the preservation of life. Take for example the phasing out of the death sentence. Consequently, should not an unborn, living human be protected by a society that is so dedicated to preservation? '

I hear constant praise from DJS on the virtues of " heavy metal" as if it was actually important and helping somebody. How can seemingly intelligent people react like this? Is it not plainly obvious that aU heavy metal is totally reactionary and offensive to socially-minded people-the macho posturing and misogynist lyrics, the advertisements featuring a sadistic male and female slave? The heavy metal bands certainly won't do anything to help in rock against sexism". thev just don't care. Their only interest is how manv albums they can sell and how to exploit women along the way.'

' This guy who wrote to you is obviously some kind of musically illiterate bopper who spends his time doing just that to pathetic groups who can't even play their own instruments - they are the commercialised rubbish he talks of and they are the ones who exploit people.'

' Within the past few years the silicon chip has come under a lot of hard criticism.... I feel that the silicon chip and all its benefits should be welcomed not rejected. Surely it is one of the most brilliant technological advancements since the wheel. So far it has been used wisely, for peaceful purposes. The public are looking on the wrong side when they say the chip is taking away their jobs; it is not, it is giving them freedom, and time to do what they want to do, not what they have to do.' ' One week it might be a nervous trade unionist. The next, a militant feminist, an argumentative film maker, a Christian punk band spokesman or a black civil rights leader ... There's a hopeful air of unpredictability among Mailbog's live guests.

A recent letter expressed the following views:

' have an interest in war as a hobby as I am one of the crazy breed known as wargamers. (We play with toy soldiers using complex rules to recreate the intricacies of battle.) People may find our hobby morbid but we are more interested in the history of war (a very important part of our heritage) and not in killing. Our style of fighting has the advantage that at the end of the battle the armies are packed away on to shelves, all living to fight another day. whilst there are no metal or plastic widows to write to. We treat our hobby responsibly, being more interested in uniforms and tactics than in death.' Producer SIMON MAJOR

Here are two recent letters to Mailbag which have prompted many of you to write in: ' I am single and quite happy with my life as it is now, so when will people stop asking why I am not married or even courting? This really gets my back up. After all, it is my choice what I do and how I spend my time and money.'

' The mass media and especially the lyrics of pop songs communicate irrational beliefs about the individual and society. These beliefs may then be accepted by the individual and influence his or her perception of the world.'

Here are two recent letters to Maiibag, both from male listeners:

' Women are equal (almost) to men. so why shouldn't they be conscripted? The author of last week's junk of telephonic bigotry seemed to think that women should do the safer jobs, such as being radar operators, whilst their " equals " are out on the front lines lugging guns and having their heads blown off. She wants equality as long as she doesn't get hurt. Hypocrite! '

' like the idea of this current wave of men looking feminine, wearing more adventurous and less conventional clothes, eyeliner and blusher. I think it's easy to criticise the outspoken and the outrageous, but it's about time the nondescript. straight and conventional bands and people were put down as well.'

' Borstals are just like a university of crime. where kids plan everything from stealing a car to robbing banks, but I don't think it's borstal that causes this, but being in transit to them. when young lads are mixed with old cons, who give them plenty of encouragement.'

1 Angry ' of Staffordshire writes:

' Mailbag caters for a group of snivelling, spotty-faced young kids who masquerade round seaside resorts in cult groups, for example, punks, mods and skin-heads. Then I, as a reasonably well-educated 22-year-old, am expected to listen to their tearful stories of how society rejects them. Surely, society being normal, mentally-capable human beings can do nothing but reject somebody who parades up and down with 25 zips stitched into his oversized ex-bus conductor's trousers. Finally, the young punk has the audacity, no, the lack of intelligence, to complain when he cannot find employment. He can then blame society for his creating mayhem all over the country during what should be his working day.'

I recently went to see Apocalypse Now, and was very impressed by its anti-war message, I began to think about kids, and how they would feel about it, and it struck me that perhaps schools should give up two or three hours a week to show films like this. I know that it's an ' X ' film, and wouldn't have been given that rating for the hell of it, but to show these views of life. particularly to kids of around 12 years old might be a good thing, as it's at this age or slightly earlier that they begin to form their social and political ideas.' ' It is with growing concern about the increasing number of dogs and their appallingly selfish owners that I write to you. Dog owners pay an absurdly low licence fee of around 38 pence per annum, which they assume entitles them to allow their four-legged friends to foul the path wherever and whenever they wish. Surely a much higher fee of around £50-100 a year would be far more realistic. Such a fee would raise revenue for the country, and hopefully discourage people from owning these evil creatures.'

On the topic of discrimination against students, sometimes by pop groups and bands through their songs, Trevor of Leicester writes: ' We are, I'm afraid, students of the very worst variety. We fritter away many an evening chatting in the college bars. I must confess that none of our fathers possesses a Jaguar, like that alluded to in the song ' Rat Race' by The Specials, though mine does have a tractor! My pals and I work an average of 24 hours a week. and look down upon many students of our age, because they spend so much more time than us working. We could never conform to that extent.'

This phone-line message came in from two listeners in Burnley:

' We're calling to see if we can get things straightened out about the image of the North West. We don't live in the flat-cap, black puding and clogs era and we don't walk around kicking cans. We do not all listen to brass bands, as most producers seem to think when choosing the opening music for programmes about the North West. and the famous Lancashire dialect is virtually dead, apart from the few old people and looney preservation societies who try to keep it going. And please could DJS, when reading out requests from someone in the North West stop putting on a pseudo-Lancashire accent. And finally, as far as Burnley is concerned, it is not all filthy smoking chimneys and grimey backstreets. And the majority of people do not live in terraced houses.'

A listener from Middlesex writes: ' What do you think about stickers? What used to be amusing and faintly interesting has become boring and annoying. It starts with compulsory stickers like the one that shows you have paid your road tax, or the GB sticker when you travel abroad by car. When you buy a new car, it has the sticker of the dealer on it. If you become a member of a windsurfing club, you'll get a sticker which states, " Windsurfers do it standing up." But what really astounds me is the fact that people even buy stickers, thus paying to advertise for others. Just how gullible are we. or is it that we need to identify ourselves with a certain croup or idea? '

A university student writes: ' On some aspects of the university system. although I would be the first to agree that there are many indispensable courses offered, for example, engineering and chemistry, there are still far too many that are obscure and totally irrelevant outside the world of libraries and lecture theatres. But perhaps just as disturbing is the number of people who use University as a chance for a social life bonanza. doing the minimum amount of work needed. It is depressing at this time of soaring unemployment to see so many scroungers using university facilities for three to four years just for an ideal social life.'

It's becoming more and more obvious that women are taking over the world. I don't mind this at all, in fact, good luck to them! But I do mind when it comes to buying my newspaper and finding that half of it is made up of women's articles. These are supposed to be working men's newspapers, but normally they have whole double pages advertising women's sales or supermarkets. pages of women's fashions and beauty tips and full pages on slimming. Doctors' receptionists have recently been a topic of discussion, and MRS BULLOCK Of

I I am a Catholic. and was seeing a Protestant girl. My parents didn't like this and told me to end the relationship.

When I refused they told me to leave. I have left home and have had to leave school and look for a job. Life was bearable until my girlfriend's parents forbade her to see me again.

' People have been killed and maimed by terrorism and compared to these people I am lucky. That is the whole basis of my protest. We are not victims of terrorism - we are victims of our own parents.' ' I want to know if I am alone in needing to

" belong somewhere. I live in Milton Keynes where everything is new; while Cardiff, where I was born, has changed beyond recognition. Surely in this age of " increased geographical mobility " others must feel this? '

1 Sir Hugh Fraser has no right to send people into the army just because they cant get a job. It's Margaret Thatcher 's fault, not theirs.'

Really, is nudism in these family holiday resorts necessary? Nudists should give the decent folk a chance and dissolve to some remote desert island '

In the 18th and 19th centuries it was common practice for a man to wear make-up; in nature the male animal is normally more brightly coloured and marked than the female. So why do people call men that wear make-up 'queer'? I blame this attitude on the Victorians and parents in the 1930s who stereotyped their children.' A middle-aged woman came up to me and gave me a scathing look.

" You oughtn't to wear those stockings," she declared to the whole world. " They make you look like a servant... Young people shouldn wear them." '

L. T. Durham , a Mailbag listener, writes about one of the subjects the programme has been dealing with recently: ' The other week on Pebble Mill two women were interviewed about a buy British campaign. Frankly, I don't know how the BBC dare show this. I mean, have you seen how much American rubbish we receive from them? I wouldn't complain if it was good, but I hate to think of my television set having to put up with the humiliation of showing Dallas! '
