Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Ame2006000020131227 (R1)When I'm asked to choose my favourite mix or record, my head explodes! Picking out one Essential mix from over a thousand was such a difficult choice. There have been so many great Essential Mixes over the years. David Holmes, Oakey's Goa mix and Sasha's Maida Vale mix all come to mind. But the mix I've chosen had a profound effect on my DJing. I remember playing it constantly one summer driving around Ibiza in my car.And listening to it again today makes you realize how prophetic it was, and how much their sound influenced not only me but the likes of Richie Hawtin, Luciano and Marco Carola as well'. Pete Tong, December 2013.

Berlin duo Ame's 2006 mix is Pete Tong's choice.

Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Andrew Weatherall20131231I heard this mix back when it first came out and it really blew my mind. It starts slow and moody and makes all these weird transitions into killer techno and electro records that I'd never heard anyone in England play before. I know it was definitely made on two turntables old school style, and you can hear all the crackles which really appeals to me. I've seen Andrew Weatherall DJ probably fifty times and he's never let me down. He's one of my heroes and a musical legend!'. Heidi.

Andrew Weatherall from 1993, in the third-ever show, is Heidi's choice!

Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Daft Punk20131227Daft Punk's first and only Essential Mix was broadcast a month after the release of their debut album 'Homework' and highlights Thomas & Guy-Man's early influences. Chicago, represented by producers like Paul Johnson and Cajmere, meets Paris in the shape of French house pioneers like Cassius and Pepe Bradock. And of course the mix includes a handful of Daft Punk and Roule classics. The mix was recorded in Pedro Winter aka Busy P's flat!

Daft Punk's 1997 mix is Annie Mac's choice to celebrate 20 years of the Essential Mix.

Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Dubfire20131228For a lot of the last 20 years I followed the Essential Mix with my show and we would carry on the party! Over the years I became very enthused by an act called Deep Dish, an Iranian-American duo out of Washington DC, who did a great mix for me in Ibiza. Deep Dish split and their two members went off on solo careers. One was Sharam. And the other was Dubfire, whose sound I love, and whose Essential Mix I've chosen'. Annie Nightingale.

Annie Nightingale picks Dubfire's 2007 Essential Mix for the 20th anniversary celebration.

Picking a favourite Essential Mix is impossible. It's like saying what's your favourite album! But in the end I went for the most relevant mix for now, from the winner of the 2013 Mercury Music Prize, James Blake. This is one of the stand out Essential Mixes for me over the past few years. Superb selction all the way through. It's interesting and varied and a real representation of his influences, which I think any good mix by an artist really should be'. Benji B.

Benji B's choice of classic Essential Mix is James Blake's mix from 2011.

Picking a favourite Essential Mix is so tough. Even I've done an Essential Mix! But I've picked a mix where someone's been brave and gone out on a limb. And that's the beauty of the Essential Mix for me. Yes I love it when it's two hours of pure house or techno. But then occasionally people will make the leap and do somethig completely different. And Jamie XX from 2011 is an amazing example'. Rob da Bank.

Jamie XX from 2011 is Rob da Bank's classic Essential Mix choice.

Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Ltj Bukem And Mc Conrad20131227There have been some game changing drum & bass Essential Mixes over the years and none more so than LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad's 1995 mix. This mix came from the era between jungle and drum & bass and some of the tracks in this mix are absolutely timeless. They're mixed together perfectly, as everything always was with Bukem, and you've got Conrad in the background doing his thing. Its just a perfect mix!' Friction.

LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad's mix from 1995 is Friction's choice.

Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Mr Scruff2009020720131231 (R1)This Essential Mix was recorded live at my monthly 'Keep It Unreal' residency in Manchester, plying mostly vinyl with a couple of CDs thrown in there too. The venue at the time was the Music Box, a sweaty, dark basement, which is now a Tesco. Listening back, I can feel the atmosphere, the heat, and a room full of lovely people enjoying the music. Now that same room is full of stock assistants & chilled celery. Oh well! We have since moved the night to Band on the Wall, and will be celebrating the 15th year of Keep it Unreal in June 2014'. Mr Scruff, December 2013.

B.Traits' Essential Mix choice is Mr Scruff from 2009.

Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Paul Oakenfold1994000020131228 (R1)Radio 1 heads back to 1994 for Paul Oakenfold's Goa Mix.
Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Pete Tong1993000020131225 (R1)I can't believe we've been doing this show for twenty years! We've done over a thousand Essential Mixes in that time and created an unbelievably rich archive of dance music history. The idea behind the Essential Mix first came from me going to New York in the 1980's, discovering the mix show and being blown away by it. Then when I got my own show on Radio 1 in the early 1990's I told my bosses that we had to have a show like this in the UK. The Essential Mix was the perfect way to get DJs like Sasha, Paul Oakenfold and Carl Cox onto Radio 1. Putting this first Essential Mix together was quite antiquated compared to the way its put together today. It was literally me standing in a room with two turntables and recording straight onto tape recorders!' Pete Tong, December 2013.

Radio 1 celebrates 20 years of the Essential Mix with the very first show from 1993.

Radio 1's Essential Mix @ 20: Plastician, Roll Deep And Digital Mystikz20131227The UK Grime & Dubstep Special was broadcast during British Music Week on Radio 1 in February 2006. The mix features three of the most prominent artists from the Grime and Dubstep scenes of the time. Part one is taken care of by the former Radio 1 resident DJ Plastician; part two is mixed by Mala from the Digital Mystikz; and the final riotous forty minutes comes courtesy of Roll Deep.

Plastician, Roll Deep and Digital Mystikz are Skream and Benga's classic mix choice.

When I was asked to do the Essential Mix I couldn't believe it! To be placed into a category of the best DJs and seeing the list of DJs who have already mixed, this left me in awe. It was a nice touch coming off a great year back in 2010 when my debut album landed on Rinse and fresh off my North American tour earlier that year. The idea behind putting the mix together was just to summarize me, my style of music and what I was digging that year with some exclusives' Roska, December 2013.
