| 01 | 20161018 | A brand new concert hall, Cedars Hall at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset, is the venue for Radio 3's Big Chamber Weekend. The Atos Trio of Berlin, former Radio 3 New Generation Artists, present a specially curated series in partnership with Radio 3 and Cedars Hall. Across the next four days the trio explore four major European musical centres, Paris, Vienna, St Petersburg and Prague, where the search for a Czech identity was flourishing from the 1860s. In today's recital the Atos Trio pair two contrasting Czech piano trios. Vitezslav Novak was a significant voice in turn of the century Prague, his style likened to Brahms, while Smetana poured his emotion into his second piano Trio at a time of great personal loss. In today's lunchtime concert the group's musical journey around four European cities brings them to Paris. In today's lunchtime concert the group's musical journey around four European cities reaches St Petersburg, a jewel in Russia's architectural and musical crowns. Two members of the Atos Trio and clarinettist Mark Simpson, all former members of Radio 3's New Generation Artists scheme, join forces in an arrangement of a Faustian tale by Stravinsky and the recital concludes with Shostakovich's deeply felt second Piano Trio, written in the aftermath of the siege of Leningrad and the loss of a dear friend. In today's lunchtime concert the group's musical journey around four European cities brings them to Vienna, a centre of power and cultural influence for centuries. Viola player Philip Dukes joins the former Radio 3 New Generation Artists for a performance of Mozart's early Piano Quartet in G minor, and then the group plays Korngold's Piano Trio in D major, written in Vienna, where Korngold was causing quite a stir at just thirteen years of age, before he made his name as a film composer in Hollywood.
