Caleb Rimtobaye is an award-winning musician, singer, DJ and guitarist from Chad. He performs as AfrotroniX, wearing a helmet that looks like it's from a science fiction movie. He's created a unique sound - Saharan electro - blending the traditional rhythms and ancient singing styles of Chad with electronic sounds including deep house, amapiano, afro house, afro tech, dubstep and ambient electronics. His mission is to change the image of Africa through his music.

GospelOnDeBeatz - born Gospel Chinemeremu Obi – is a Nigerian producer responsible for some of the hits that brought Afrobeats to the world, including Davido's 2012 banger All of You.

GospelOnDeBeatz has worked with major Nigerian stars like Burna Boy, Patoranking, and Yemi Alade, as well as Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie and AKA – the hugely influential South African rapper and producer who was shot dead in 2023.

He's also an artist in his own right. Warehouse Gospel Rebirth is the name of his most recent EP.

How do you keep on making music when you've been forced to flee your home? That is the question JC Kibombo has faced.

Like other artists from Goma in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, rumba artist JC Kibombo left when the city was seized by M23 rebel fighters in January 2026.

In this episode, JC Kibombo tells This Is Africa about his music style, the challenges of recording songs in his new location, Beni, and the Amani music festival which has had to relocate but which is due to take place in Lubumbashi in April 2026.

As becomes clear, JC believes music has an important role to play in bringing people together and promoting peace.

Malakey

Trying to stand out in a country with such a rich musical heritage as Mali can be tough, especially when your family isn't fully behind your ambitions. But Malakey has carved out a place with his unusual genre-busting sound – a blend of traditional rhythms, RnB, jazz, urban music and rap. Big hits include Baby Myra, Bossoumani, Fana Ba and Yako, which reached over 11 million views on YouTube. And he's collaborated with one of the greats of Malian music – the kora player Sidiki Diabaté – as well as popular, hard-hitting rapper Weei Soldat.

Malakey tells This is Africa how he was almost about to give up on music when he got his lucky break when he performed his first concert. He recalls how he only found out his grandmother was also a singer after four years of trying to break in. That's given his music more of a meaning. He's now on a mission to keep his Bambara musical roots alive - but in a way that is urban and more enjoyable for modern audiences.

Mani Martin

Mani Martin was one of the first Rwandan artists to emerge after the devastating genocide of 1994. He was a child when the genocide took place, and when he started writing songs. His 2004 hit Urukumbuzi, released when he was only 15, was a song of hope drawing on the stories of other children traumatised by what they had experienced.

Since then, Martin has gone on to collaborate with international artists including Kenya's Sauti Sol and Eddy Kenzo from Uganda, to perform around Africa, and to help build Rwanda's music sector by mentoring newer artists.

In December 2025 Martin dropped his seventh body of work. It's called Rebirth, because, as he tells DJ Edu in this episode, it was written after a life changing experience when his home was swept away by torrential rain.

Noura Mint Seymali

Noura Mint Seymali is Mauritania's biggest female star. She comes from a family of griots - traditional storytellers and praise singers who are custodians of the culture and oral historians. Her stepmother, Dimi Mint Abba, is one of the most famous Mauritanian musicians of all time – and one of the first to bring traditional Mauritanian music to a global audience.

Noura Mint Seymali is following in those big footsteps, and consciously making her music more accessible internationally by mixing in modern instruments and genres. She is however fiercely proud of the tradition she represents, and as she tells TIA, all her songs include the ardin, a stringed instrument unique to Mauritania and exclusively played by women.

Noura's latest album, which dropped in November 2025, is called Yenbett.

Nigerian alte/RnB/afrobeats singer-songwriter Tolani has just released a heart-on-her-sleeve album. As she tells DJ Edu, much of it is inspired by a particularly painful breakup, and the title references Tolani's tendency to procrastinate.

Songs range from Hate Loving, inspired by relationships that drag on long after the love has died, to Treasure, which is about regaining confidence after a breakup, and Punish You, a gleeful revenge number.

Tolani also talks about the challenges of forging a music career when you come from a family of celebrities. Her father is billionaire Femi Otedola - one of Nigeria's richest men. She anticipates a level of criticism other artists might not suffer, and this is one of the reasons it has taken her so long to release her album.

Will Flash is a rising Afrobeats star from Liberia, who says Rema is a big inspiration. He also gives thanks to his dad, who has supported his career every step of the way so far. His hits include My Ex, Kilimanjaro and Friday. Will Flash tells This Is Africa that his forthcoming EP will include a wide variety of different musical styles, and also that he's proud to showcase Liberia's unique sounds and its koloqua pidgin English.
