Sir Mark Tully travels to South Africa to explore the history of the 21 years that Mahatma Gandhi spent there.

Travelling from Durban to Johannesburg, he investigates Gandhi's early development as a political activist and his impact on the ANC.

He also talks to relatives who still live in South Africa including his granddaughter Ela Gandhi and great-granddaughter Kirti Menon about his personal as well as public life.
