Villette

First broadcast from 19990328 to 20090814. (* = BBC7).

Lucy Snowe flees from an unhappy past in England to begin a new life as a teacher at a French boarding school in the great cosmopolitan capital of Villette. Soon Lucy’s struggle for independence is overshadowed by both her freindship with a worldly English doctor and her feelings for an autocratic schoolmaster. Charlotte Brontë’s strikingly modern heroine must decide if there is any man in her society with whom she can live and still be free. Included in the cast are Joseph Fiennes and Keira Knightley. Directed by Catherine Bailey and first broadcast in April 1999.

Charlotte Bronte's rich and remarkable story of a woman growing in self knowledge, wholly modern in its understanding of love and obsession. Dramatised in three parts by James Friel.
