6M20150705An exploration of the eventful life of Jerry Lee Lewis.
As we celebrate rock 'n' roll, another chance to hear a programme first broadcast in 2005 which looks back on the eventful life of Jerry Lee Lewis, who turns 80 and plays two dates in the UK in September.
As well as Jerry Lee himself, contributors include sister Linda Gail Lewis, ex-wife Myra Gail Lewis, biographer Charles White, Cowboy Jack Clement (the man who discovered him), Jools Holland, Jamie Cullum, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, Hank Marvin, Joe Brown, film director Taylor Hackford, record producer Marshall Chess and others.
Jools Holland says of Jerry Lee " I think the thing about Jerry Lee is that, whenever he plays it doesn't sound like anyone else but Jerry Lee, no matter what song he does, it might be country song or a rock and roll song, but it's Jerry Lee, it's unmistakably him.
Tom Jones adds "The first time I heard Jerry Lee Lewis was in 1957. I was walking through Pontypridd, where I come from in South Wales, with some of my friends and we were talking about rock and roll and all of a sudden Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On comes out of the loudspeaker outside of the record shop and my friend said "Is that what you're talking about?" and I said "That's exactly what I'm talking about!"".
