Their impact goes beyond mere commerce, it shapes contemporary culture. They are the Zietgeisters and it's about time we met them.

Over the next four weeks he'll be talking with the visionary masterminds plotting a future for education, music and television. But the first Zeitgeister is the founding editor of Vogue China, Angelica Cheung... the woman who not only wants to change the meaning of Made in China, but also change China itself. She's been called the most powerful woman in fashion today and the gate-keeper of the growth hotspot of the world - the market where consumer demand is unlimited.

For Angelica Cheung, fashion is not frippery. It's important - as a global business worth billions, and as a platform for freedom of expression. It allows individuals to be individual - it's political.

Programme 2. Martin Mills - who, as the co-founder and co-owner of the Beggar's Group, has been at the forefront of British independent music since the the 1970s. The Group's labels include XL Recordings, 4AD, Matador and Rough Trade and the artists who have graced their books range from Adele to Radiohead, from the Lurkers to the Savages, from the White Stripes to Gary Numan, and from Dizzee Rascal to The xx. Having grown Beggars into what is now possibly the world's most influential independent music group, Martin Mills is less a Zeitgeister (of the moment) and more a true survivor (at the forefront of decades of moments). But what exactly makes this shy and thoughtful man - more tortoise than hare - tick? How does he maintain his hold over this organisation and what drives him on, as his influence on the industry continues to grow.

YouTube - For a platform that was launched in 2005 as a means of sharing personal videos on the internet (the very first YouTube video was called 'Me At The Zoo' and was uploaded by co-founder Jawed Karim), it has become a major player in how we consume video content and increasingly in how we make it. Today 100 hours of video are uploaded onto YouTube every minute... six billion hours of video are watched every month. And by the time you finish reading this description, those figures may already be out of date.

The BBC Arts Editor, Will Gompertz, in searching for the next generation of cultural Zeitgeisters, meets the people who are moving YouTube up to the next level: 'YouTubers' like Benjamin Cook, who posts regular episodes of 'Becoming YouTube' on his channel Nine Brass Monkeys; Andy Taylor, who's 'Little Dot Studios' aims to bridge the gap between television and YouTube; and Ben McOwen Wilson who is Director of Content Partnerships for YouTube in Europe.

In the final programme of the series, Will meets Daphne Koller & Andrew Ng, co-founders of Coursera, the company that is revolutionising education much in the same way that Amazon and iTunes turned publishing and music on their heads. Daphne and Andrew have together created a platform which allows anyone from anywhere in the world (who has internet access) to attend lectures and classes given by the best teachers in the world - for free. Universities as we know them may soon be a thing of the past.

He kicks of the series with the self-proclaimed "grandmother of performance art", Marina Abramovic as she prepares for a major new exhibition in London's Serpentine Gallery. She recalls her early forays into performance art, including in her native Yugoslavia, along the Great Wall of China, during her record breaking residency at New York's Museum Of Modern Art... and as a postie in London.

And then over the next four weeks Will Gompertz will be talking with the visionary masterminds who are plotting to take architecture into a new future that also recognises the past; who are using their own art as leverage in community activism; and who are dragging mainstream theatre into the 21st century. He'll be talking to Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates and British born impresario Sonia Friedman.

Now though, as he launches his directorship of this year's Venice Architecture Biennale, he presents a new manifesto - one that takes architecture into a new future which also recognises the past.

Will Gompertz travels to Chicago to meet the the artist who is using collectors' desire for his artworks (they sell for anything upwards of several hundred thousand dollars each) to transform the rundown Southside where he now lives.
